What is the maximum map size that T3D can handle? I've googled it but I can't really get a clear answer on this. Some say it's 2x2 km but I'm not sure wether this is true or not.

With T3D 2.0+ 4096^2 sized heightmaps work and well the world size is only limited by how detailed you want it to be. If you used a heightmap of 4096^2 on a world that's 16^2km large that would mean each pixel on the heightmap accounts for 4^2 meters in the world which would be fairly rough(you couldn't create a bumpy road, for example, as each bump would be the size of your average car). Realistically I would say that currently 8^2km worlds are the largest that can be done. I don't know if BNG supports loading multiple heightmaps to various planes at once(as T3D does support) which would allow for theoretically unlimited world scale(theoretic is a key word, we'd still be limited by the sizes of the heightmap files as well as textures, objects, etc).

Thank you for such a detailed description, you've pretty much answered any other questions I could have had:). I was planning on making a quite big map of a real world location but didn't know if I would have been able to. I have another question though: Wouldn't road bumps be created on the road object rather than on a road-textured part of the terrain? I'm saying this because I've noticed that the road bumps on the Civetta bolide video were way too detailed to be created by just a heightmap.

If we are to get planes, (unlikely, but potentially a cool feature/post-release expansion pack) It would be cool to have fairly detailed "towns" in the immediate vicinity of an airfield, and large swaths of undetailed terrain between them. My biggest issue with planes in RoR was how quickly you traverse even the biggest maps.

Don't quote me on this but I'm pretty sure that all the roads are made through heightmap. LJFHutch always used fairly high detailed heightmaps, even in RoR. Like his 2^2 km desert map in RoR used a 2048^2 heightmap so that would be a meter of land controlled by each pixel which would fairly easily allow for the creation of potholes and whatnot. Note that this is just speculation.

When I said 'planes' I did not mean aircraft. I meant a plane.
