Project cancelled 5/30/17 Thanks for the support! 12/28/15- On hold indefinitely....again. Should probably just put this baby to sleep. I may start all over and put this grand experimental Frankenstein map into a museum. There are so many cluttered and wrong things going on here I do not know where to start except starting over with what I know now. The original appeal of Forest Hills is still alive however. 9/26/15- Back to work on this. 7/14/15- ON HOLD INDEFINITELY. Many reasons but I'm going to cease trying to release maps. In my opinion it just isn't worth the effort and my time right now. This is a beta and I have no business tying up resources that are better left to a bigger picture. To me it has become a silly and tiresome exercise in futility. I will focus on learning other programs in the meantime to sharpen my skills for down the road. I will continue to post screens of my accomplishments however bittersweet it will be. I'm proud of what I've learned and am sad I can't share that with people but it is what it is. I am so grateful to all that have helped and given selflessly! Thank you! Perhaps someday when this program reaches it's zenith I will see if this map will work. Welcome to Forest Hills, my first map. Forest Hills is modeled after a mix of high north central Washington State alpine and British Columbia coastal terrain. Prominently displayed are the obnoxious trademarks of mans supremacy over the environment. My vision for Forest Hills is ambitious and will include lots ofvaried vegetation, hidden off road paths, lakes, roadside pullouts, traffic signage, guard rail and a wonderful sky. Last and hardly least is the roads. The intention is for smooth and fast roads that are as comfortable to drift on as is slothing around in grandma's 1977 Moonhawk Country Squire station wagon. Fast straights, smooth arching turns and the unexpected blind turn/hill will make for a satisfying drive. Tired of taking the long fast route?, make a short cut and get there quicker! (4X4 required). The entire map is driveable. Regular updates will happen as I work on this fun journey! Credits: A special thanks to Ouerbacker and Doullpepper for their time, patience and generosity! This map wouldn't be what it is without you guys. THANK YOU! The entire BeamNG development team, especially LFHutch , for this awesome and insanely fun hobby. The BeamNG community: Muria, Occam's Razor (perfect road signs!), Nadeox, Fundador & Mecke96 (awesome tutorials)....... Can't wait to comfortable drift around in grandma's 1977 Moonhawk Country Squire station wagon sport. Oh wait
Roads look nice. This would look awesome with some trees! Also, how big is this map? It looks huge in the pictures!
Thank you! It is a 2048 map and I've accidentally hit on a road layout that works beautifully. I've done some tests with trees and vegetation and I'm very excited how it looks and feels. Roads will be bit wider and right now AR162's station wagon is a blast on this thing. Right now I'm battling all these updates as they are screwing with files, materials etc. It's a lot of work keeping track of my map assets through all this and I absolutely refuse to let this one slip away! I will get new map pics up as soon as I can. Tons of texture and groundcover work to do.
YES! A map based of Coastal BC. (I live there, and it's pretty. ) The map itself looks awesome too! Seems I'm not the only one that wants to make a map like this. (Well I already started, but due to texture issues was forced to stop after a few minutes of making the map...) Either way, keep up the good work! I shall anticipate a release.
Uh oh...I'm in deep cacka now. Let's just say there will be a "feeling" of coastal BC in there. No plans for a coast at this time. The theory is to meld the high and dry North Washington Cascades (Slate Peak area), with the lush and temperate coastal forests of WA/BC. This will require the ambition I mentioned due to multiple textures and groundcovers. Regardless if I achieve my goal at the level I envision it will be a fine map to drive on and will be a nice learning lesson for future maps. Thanks for the compliments!
looking like a good start! I live in the dry south eastern side of Washington, but I love to go camping in the cascades. I may have to work on a map of my side just to show the rest of the state
Thank you fellow Washingtonian!. Funny you mention E. Wa because one of my ideas for a map is an area on Highway 2 that drops into a massive two mile wide coulee (can't remember where exactly). Very scenic and dramatic driving through it and wouldn't require tons of groundcover or special textures. Would probably look ALOT like Ouerbackers Blackhills with the associated heightmap etc. - - - Updated - - - Tree test. Trees of course, by LFHutch. Real time reflections are just flat out KICKASS.
I actually never meant "coastal" as in right on the ocean, but nearish. (Sorry for confusion) So no expectation changes there. I live very close to the washington border, so the terrain should feel very similar to places around here. (I actually rode on a small highway in Washington along the ocean today.) And you're welcome for the compliments, so here's more!: Those trees look perfect for the terrain, and the road layout keeps looking better just by looking at it. Good job!
Thank you! I worry about expectations in here, a tough crowd. I am busy fine tuning the roads as I am finding out I'm quite the perfectionist and getting the decal roads as tight as I possibly can. "jerky" roadlines are annoying as hell. Currently I am investigating terrain textures and firing up the groundcovers. I managed to get a nice new field grass plant in game and it doesn't look too out of place. Sways nicely in the breeze too. Also getting the roadside roadbed placed. Coming soon will be the lakes and the off-road network going. No major disasters yet. Hi-res screens below of new field grass with a mix of stock and imported rock textures and plants. FUN!
Looking twice as good now! And about the lake... Maybe I'll end up taking more pictures on this map than driving on it. Maybe you could have an off-road trail leading to some cliff on the lake for a nice viewpoint. Not sure if this would fit in the terrain you made, but it would be nice. Keep up the work!
Thank you. I'm aiming for a photogenic map as much as possible. The lakes, although smallish, will be an integral part of the map. I definitely have plans to make them accessible and pretty. My current decision making on the off-road aspect involves whether to have paved access or off-road access or both, more than likely both. I need to contain myself or I will destroy this thing trying to do too much, however, a sort of "Cliffside promenade" at one of the lakes has always been in the plans. I'm not a fan of the current water textures and I will try to see if I can get the old style working. The old textures just look more fluid and natural in my book. Update: Overview of the layout with small lakes in the distance.
I'm going to spend lots of time cruising these roads. Looks awesome! It would be cool to have a terrain with one of BC's famous massive "finger" lakes. (seems Washington has some too.) Obviously you can't put a massive lake on your terrain, nor was I expecting one. Maybe I'll make a map like that when I get better at map making and my game works in the first place lol. As for offroad trails along the lake(s), sounds awesome. You work very fast, and produce a very good looking product. Keep it up!
2015 Forest Hills Drive. Good time as any to explain the flakey map name. Sometime back I was working on a map called Chugach Range, named after a mountain Range in AK. I wanted something original that actually existed and the map was very "alpiney". I lost that map and started over and became obsessed with real and unique names for the new( and eventually lost ), map. Long story short, it took me a week to think of something and I decided that was a completely bullshit waste of time and was never going to get anywhere if I couldn't figure out a name in a week. So, here I am with plain ole' Forest Hills. A %100 cliché and totally uninspired map name, more akin to a mental institution, landfill or some nasty swanky gated community outside of Oxnard. It's in stone and I ain't changing it godamnit.
Forest Hills fits in with the naming style of the existing maps Then again most areas in North America have either very basic names, or names adopted from the natives in the area.
Exactly! Tons of aboriginal names, and then you have things like: "Big Lake" in Washington... It's a lake, and it's pretty big... Creativity for the win? I still think the name for this map is pretty good anyway.
