So I got to thinking, and I got this idea; if there is no restriction to how big a map can be in beamng, what if a modder or a developer was to make a map which featured multiple islands, with water between them obviously, and each island has its own airport, maybe a tarmac runway, or a gravel one, etc. They don't really need much detail since there is more time spent in the air. I'd love to do this myself but I have no clue on modelling or any of that stuff, but it's a little suggestion for anyone that wants to do it!
While there is no hard limit for terrain size, big maps have an annoying flicker between meshes that gets worse as you move away from the origin point (center of the map usually). Especially at high altitude, flicker between terrain and water looks horrible. Increased nearclip in the map options reduces the effect, but then you can't use the interior camera as half of the cockpit gets clipped away. A map with deep waters and tall coasts would help too, the flickering is worse on shallow beaches.
The texturing would also be horrible of the terrain painter. It get's stretched really badly as you can only use a certain size heightmap...
how big can the map be before it runs into these problems ? gta 4 size gta 5 size ? just as a rough guide
So I guess in the alpha we have now it's not possible, although iv'e never really noticed flicker as bad as the one you posted. but you explained it well, thanks! - - - Updated - - - judging by what miura said even the gta 4 map would be big, since none of the beamng maps are even that big yet. maybe gta 3 size, maybe xD
cool the biggest ive seen is "salt flats" by i think sorry if im wrong Miura thats got a 25km straight
You can see the flickering even on small maps if you move the camera up high enough. 4x4 km is ok if you don't fly high, 8x8 km if you don't mind some flickering. Much bigger maps will look ok if there are no meshes such as a waterplane. I have an 8x8 km map with many small islands in RoR, maybe I'll try converting that some day, or make a new map like that. It's mainly made for ships, but should be good for planes too if I make runways.
about the flickering: we know about that problem and tracked it down to be depth buffer being too shallow to display near and far distant data correctly. We are looking into replacing with an improved version, but that will take some time
