I'm working on my home town, Protea Heights. I want to make it extremely accurate. So far I made an almost exact replica of the complex of flats I live in. Now I just need to fix the collisions, and remove the building interiors to improve performance, and then I can expand my creation until it is the full town. If you want to know what my map will look like when it's done, feel free to explore Protea Heights on google maps, this link will put you in street view at the complex of flats where I live. From there you can check out the rest of the town. Below is some screenshots of my work so far. I will release a WIP beta for you guys to test out when the map gets big enough to actually drive in. Here's the link to the real location in google maps: https://www.google.co.za/maps/@-33....data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1smBGYC9n1RXJWLBnyiBOfeA!2e Here's a video I made. In this video I walk through Protea Heights. This will give you an idea of what the map will look like when it's done, since I am trying to make it as close to 100% accurate as I can. Here's the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrpbnJmzN2k Sorry I'm taking so long with my map, but it's really hard work, and I'm the only one working on it at the moment. I can give you development updates once in a while. So here's the first development update so far: I am remaking the entire complex of flats, because that model I show in the screenshots is too big to export. I deleted the building interiors, and saved the buildings. I decided to make the map in parts, and put it together when enough of the parts are made. I am still working on the first part. The first part is almost done. I already made the gate area and the trashroom and some sidewalks and some roads. I made some walls too. I fixed the bug where cars get stuck in the sidewalks, and I fixed some texture problems. I will post the next update when I worked on the map again. I remade the entire complex for the 2nd time, and with excellent results. Here's a video of the map so far: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbhGbxgRQkM
Looks fun! I love driving in cities with lots of trees and buildings. They make the game feel more alive and real. Could be great for cinematic shots and Role-Play.
Awesome. That's the beauty of T3D and Beamng....you can do anything you want. Modeling all my old neighborhoods is a goal of mine too.
Glad you guys like it so far! I'm having a hard time to figure out the collision model though, and the model doesn't want to go at the height I want to to. I drag it around in the editor, but it only goes 3 different heights. Height 1: Half under the map. Height 2: a bit too high, and floating in mid-air. Height 3: Way too high in the sky. I completely removed the building interiors, and made one building with just about 22K polygons, but I can't seem to get the collisions to work right. The car drives right into the center of the building, and then crashes there, even though the walls are not inside the houses.
I know exactly what you mean with the model skipping about when trying to move it. Try deselecting it... go to terrain editor and then go back and try. Or deleting the model and importing it again. Or restarting the game, exiting the level, etc... I don't know what causes it but it appears to be random. Good luck with the project! It looks like it'll be really fun! EDIT: Someone else may be able to help with the collisions. In the mean time check out the Sketchup / model tutorials in the Content Creation section. They cover dealing with collisions, LOD, etc. (Even if you're not using sketchup check out the sketchup model tutorial... there's some useful information there)
The first problem is probably editor grid snapping. You can turn that off under edit>snap options. The second problem is likely the collision mesh being offset upon export. Make sure that when you export from your modeler, both your visual mesh(es) and collision mesh have their locations, rotations, and scales applied.
Thanks for the help, and yes, I am using sketchup 2014 make. I managed to make a low poly block with working collisions, so when I get the buildings at the right height, I could put the block over the buildings and hide them. Then the collisions should work. - - - Updated - - - You were right! I disabled grid snapping, now it works fine! Thanks for the help! Now I can finally make my map with ease!
