Yeah actually your right on that one they should decide not us that decides because then it would degrade into a mess, but I am sure tDev will have a secret code for the ideal moderator team from the community xD
The air in the unofficial BeamNG.Discord was so toxic that I couldn't properly do my moderation duties. Here's to hoping that doesn't happen again! And if the devs are looking for moderation staff, hit me up. I work for free (and beer).
If the devs would join in from time to time I don't see a reason why not. If that's not the case, we already have like 5 discord servers so it would be a waste of resources.
LOL nice plug xD, but yeah, it needs to be as non toxic as possible or someone is gonna have to put on a bunny suit and respirator to detoxify it I would agree it needs to be a single place where everyone can come and hang out and not for abuse....
^^ this I wouldn't be surprised if the reason there's about 5 discords is because each has its own level/form of elitism. (e.g. noobs not welcome etc) Having an official Discord where all are welcome would be awesome
Yeah I feel bad about your Discord that fell apart man, but yeah, I feel that if its managed correctly it will last longer than a couple of years, gotta find the right people to run it correctly, but thats not up to any of us "normal" people thats up to the "Staff" to do that job
Gaining mods would be a problem. BeamNG is a very very popular game so the discord would explode with mawbey even thousands of people. Lots of active community members on the forums would be great moderators but are busy modders and dont want to deal with the discord 24/7. So then you still have quite a few active non modders on the forums who would be good moderators, but we will need alot if the discord is going to grow to over hundreds of players
Personally I think requiring you to post your forum account to gain access to the discord would be an excellent way to prevent a lot of trolls. You could probably automate it with a discord bot, which could ask the discord user their forum name, and then the bot would PM the user on the forum asking for verification. But otherwise as long as you have a good group of moderators, I believe the server would be a great idea. However just a suggestion, you should not try to attempt to create some sort of special role which puts some community members over others based on the discretion of mods for things like really good mods, or just being active often. Servers on which I have seen this tend to have the people with the roles develop kinda of a feeling of being elite to the normal member. However roles which are based specifically on other things, for example a role for verified downloads (downloaded and installed by a logged in user) on a mod could be used for a role, because it is objective and doesn't allow any biases since it is simply a value. But this is all theoretically if you try to do something similar.
Just putting it out there that the so called "elitism" on the community run unofficial servers comes cause people still think meshslaps and low quality mods is the way forward, therefore communities get separated into different servers based on their stance on modding or their view on the game. That is also how a lot of toxicity boils up on the forum so expecting the discord to be drama free would be ignorant at best. Furthermore some of the people all jumping up and down saying "make me a moderator" is amusing given most of these people have all but abandoned their own servers in the past instead of doing moderation.
Yes, moderators for that service that will no longer exist fairly soon. Take a big think about what you're actually writing...
I think he just means we'll need moderators (for the Discord server) in the future, judging by his experience with the current service.
yes, hi, welcome to the internet, before everybody had a centralized service where global moderators could hop on any complaint and make unilateral decisions on whether people have a right to exist on your platform
edit: I guess never mind ;-) Oh by the way, Thomas, good luck on the journey of a more centralized web.
Are you even using the right IRC? It looks nothing like what I see when clicking "Chat". Unless I am missing something here I dunno.
