My question would instead be, what is it that Discord can offer that you cannot with plain text? It is not like that BeamNG have any multiplayer and voip makes much sense...
Video, photo, and link embeds, ability to paste pictures into chat. In the old BeamNG discord we used voice on occasion just to chat.
Those reasons seems fairly thin to me, but allright. I don't care, just carry on joining the centralization of the web!
video, photo, and link embeds are features of various IRC clients something you can easily choose to use
Personally I think people who are staff on the forums should be the only people to be staff on discord IMHO. But yes, Discord sounds like a wonderful idea.
I don’t have or use Discord, but I’d consider getting it if BeamNG had an official, well-moderated server. I think that ideally, the server could be run by staff on this site, but I can’t imagine managing a bunch of children is too high on the list of many devs. If community moderation was a thing, it’d be nice to have established and trusted members doing that, not just whoever signs up. Also, as a few users have mentioned, having some way to verify you have an account on this website would probably be good to keep the server in check.
Not just an account verification, but if the now-verified user has been a troublemaker/has displayed bad behavior in the past, the moderation team should be able to deny user's entry to the server as they see fit.
Delinked my IRC server with Beamng's. Now you have 2-3 members left in the channel, basically empty. I guess there's not much moving to do now anyway, so I think you can just go a head and make one of these "discord servers" that isn't really a server on its own.
That was quite early There is no final decision on Discord, how it would work, etc. or IRC yet (the thread is about getting some feedback/opinions on that ) IRC had its time (and I personally enjoyed that), although Discord is becoming more and more used nowadays, I guess it's just how things changes with time. About the questions about moderation: We would expect trolls and stuff to happen, no way you can really prevent such things. Although if there's a desire for a Discord server, I'd expect people to try doing their best to preserve it. I'd probably expect the server to be more relaxed (being a chat, it has a different pace and tone than a forum) (also please no ask to be a moderator, does not work =))
I understand no final decision has been made on the "discord" issue just yet thats fully understandable but I hope we dont get what happened the last time.... I agree that Trolls and all that stuff will happen but if its correctly monitored and contained, it will be very manageable and it won't affect the greater amount of users on it, I feel it needs to be an easier way to talk to everyone rather than posting long threads that takes forever to come in response to. As for preserving the Discord server I agree it's up to the people to preserve the order on it and not to start hurling crap and stuff around on it and that was when it got real bad and it lead to the previous server closure. As for recent updates to the software there is slow mode now that I have gone into detail about in the next point below this one As long as its relaxed and has a "Real life" section to it that should do everyone well and I think Discord has been adding in "slow mode" to contain the flood of people spamming servers and stuff now so its going to be more useful, just encase say one channel gets out of control the slow mode can be brought in and it could be whacked up to 90 seconds between messages so that it can slow the entire channel down and the mods can go in and sort out an issue and then remove slow mode As for asking to be moderators, I understand that is a staff decision on who is worthy of being a "Beam Discord Moderator", you need the right sort of person for it but also if we do go for it there should be a community support team there as well that has a wide set of skills who can handle the modding side of the game when the staff members are busy doing other things like say adding in cars for versions 0.16 or 0.17, but also there should be a Game support section that you could directly talk to the staff and it should almost be like a hidden channel (yes I am referencing the "Game-support" channel from the Automation discord server here because they have a very good setup for handling game breaking problems) I mean those are my thoughts on what Nadeox has said there, also it provides my own view on the matter of a few things, but I feel an "Automation Discord" style would be good here, just not an exact copy but to have its own unique areas that can help sort the support ID issues and stuff, also links to the forum and wiki articles to help with things there, I am just looking at it from my own perspective again Feel free to respond to this and if you feel if I have messed up on stuff pick it apart and tell me what I said wrongly
Less security, more potential for ifections / hacking, moves world closer to large corporations controlling everything, another bloated mess of code with questionable bug control running opening to your computer to world. It is a true dream for any intelligence agency to gain access to people via some central place, like Discord, force control to what is shared etc. Way world has been moving towards for quite many years already. Also instead of information posted to forums, it moves information to hidden small circle, where information disappears almost instantly. Just that some thing is 'in' does not make it any good, but also I can see need for a company to be fashionable and provide people what people need for company to appear as following times, no matter how badly mislead people would be. Surely, one small game providing place to discuss for it's customers is not end of the world, but there is always those wider views which would need to be considered in order to move the world to direction where ones want to see it going. Also, given the time it takes to moderate stuff (you can't have a jungle as it is worse than not to have Discord server), would same time investment give better results on some other area? Right, I have not been with the times for at least 20 years or so, maybe it is just that I'm too fossil for this direction world and Internet is moving towards, but I think this question Tomatix asks is very valid one. I would ask it for many web pages too, JS should not be part of any website, it is a mean of exploit, while images might be good, plain text is what I seek from most websites, however it is fashionable to have very little useful text these days, all sort of huge images and ton of rather shady javascript which in length usually is far more than actual useful text on web page. For me, considering these aspects would be important, sadly it is emotion driven persons who rule this world and have caused not important to become important, maybe thus it is imporant for the image of the company to have this discord, but is it right reason to have it?
To be honest, I really do not care. The service I've been trying to provide have rarely if ever been properly followed up by the staff itself. I have never received complaints, if there ever was one. I have never seen anyone from the staff itself just sticking around for moderating stuff. It is just a matter of having either a client or the browser up and look at it now and then. I have never received any form of feedback from the staff about things that should be done, cleared up with, etc. And Thomas have been fairly unpredictable when it comes to change things. I just learned via this thread about this change proposal, but he really should've come to me first saying he thinks about it; I don't need/want to give him my thought, all I want is some clear preparations before a proposal went official. And finally, it seems to me that the majority likes to make the web more centralized (and less what the Internet really should be about) and want their Discord. My conclusion was; OK f. it, let's just delink so you guys can go a head. But beware, centralizing things will eventually bite your ass. Finally, if you guys do change your mind and think IRC is the way, I have not closed down for good and is still willing to follow up on the service.
I've never worked for BeamNG... I was once also a part of the RoR forum back in 2008 or something, and I eventually joined to take care of their IRC channel. Things kind of escalated, so I began renting my own server that I hosted IRC on, RoR's chat migrated to my server, which is still up but never used anymore. BeamNG came soon to life and I continued with the IRC service for that, as well.
