Hello, and I have recently ran out of ideas for how to get my Xbox 360 (first gen) working properly again. I have had it since about 2008, and have only had one RROD, and it was repaired then.

Recently, I noticed it will overheat if I play a game for more than 15 minutes on a CD, or about 20-30 minutes on a downloaded one.

I have tried replacing the thermal paste, which was WAY past due (it was crusty, and iridescent and blacked out), which seemed to only help a tiny bit. I may need to get a new fan, but I don't know if that would help.

If anyone has any ideas on how to get the Xbox to not overheat so fast, please share them. (FYI, I keep the Xbox on top of a wooden desk, and it is laying on it's side)

When you're playing any games, do you hear the fans spin up? Are the fans actually running?

Well, the fans are moving, but I even tried it with the fans OUT, and it heated up at the same rate. I felt where the fans were and they seem to produce a lot of heat even when I am at the dash.

I know if I let my 360 idle at the dashboard for long enough it'll still get warm. But as the console heats up, the fan speed should increase.

EDIT: The heatsinks are clean and free of dirt and dust right?

Yes and yes. I could try a very thorough clean.

I am also on IRC ATM, so I can be reached there too right now.

I have little experience with this console stuff (Only newer gen console we own is an Xbox Slim which works fine. Our other stuff is a PS2 in my room, ColecoVision in the basement which still needs work, and a Wii.) but maybe you could take a Dremel to the case and stick a 120mm fan on it or something? Otherwise maybe mod or even upgrade (Not sure if even possible) the heatsink.

    I dunno.

A quick Google tells me that you can just attach fan wires to the 12v power source for the disk drive:

First I would just try a heatsink mod or something.

Does you're xbox actually turn off and flash 4 red lights because it's overheating, or does it just get hot? I have a 1st gen xbox 360 that I got from 2006, and the fans sound like a jet engine all the time. (doesn't help when the fan bearings are completely shot).

It RROD's from overheating. I can actually hold my hand on the heatsinks for 2-3 seconds before it gets uncomfortable after it shuts off.

Well the RROD is three red rings. If it's shutting down due to overheating, it'll show two red rings.

Maybe then you could get 60FPS. OR EVEN 1080P!!!11

How about a water cooling system? (Strap an AIO on there or something?)

just going by that I guess the fans are shot.

on my 1st gen elite the fans don't "spin up" par-se, they just howl like a jet engine as long as the console is on.

lol, you city people and you complicated ideas... Just put an air conditioner in front of it, DUH!

I have a 2010 unibody MacBook with heat problems. I would suggest taking its case off or adding holes at the top and/ or put it in a place where the air in and out vents are free of any obstruction. As a finial step I would get a playstation because xbox (and Microsoft) suck.

I have a first gen elite as well and my fans will spin faster, but it usually takes a long time for it to happen.

Oh yeah, nothing like first gen PS3s and their horrible wifi connections and the somewhat minor YLOD. Or how horrible it is to try to play multiplayer games on the PS3 (group voice chat with different games? nope) Sure the super slim PS3s run amazingly quiet (I would know, I have one) but if I wanted to play online games with my friend, its Xbox 360 all the way.
