The devs did not change it to hell-piano, I assure you that.

No I did not Download a Mod, not Purposely, to make it sound like its from the deep depths of hell. Not exactly scary, but certainly strange, especially the reason that I didn't purposely get a demonic piano mod.

A demonic piano would play an array of tritones, diminished triads, and diminished 7th chords in its midst. dim7 in the V chord before resolving to the 1, is a true earmark of all that. LOL
Now mod in a Hammond B-3 Organ with a couple of wooden Leslie 122 speakers... and now you be speakin' my language! (And hence, the origin of my user name). ;-)

Hah hah! True that. Thanks for the compliment. My interest in classic cars & car video gaming is only preempted by my interest in psychedelic 60's keyboards, flight simulation, severe weather, and volunteering at my local animal shelter. Strange mix of stuff I know. Digression and "nerding out" as you call it, all oki-dokie in my book. Carry on my good man!

Well... my wife calls it a walking encyclopedia of something else (which shalt remain nameless)…. but so it goes. I don't expect her to embrace everything I'm into.
As for walking encyclopedia of knowledge, I sum it up as a great depth of intelligence in some key, limited areas... followed by some surprisingly abysmal gaping holes and short comings-- when it comes to knowledge in others. Really rather frightening, the disparity between the two.

But that's where my wife has my back and we compliment each other. She's more the general knowledge, multi-tasker... the "putter-outter" of fires.
I'm more the one thing at a time, attention to details, wrestle with the task until it's done, lose track of time, sort of guy. She gets more things done in a day, and quicker... but I have more patience for things that take longer; so it works out.

So as not to hijack the op's thread any more than I already have (ahemm… sorry about that there) my thought on the strange hissing, sea shell sound of the piano. Maybe it's an emulation of harmonic resonance of all the strings on the piano combined-- without any dampening by the hammers? Sometimes, ambient sounds that vibrate at sympathetic frequencies, will be captured by the strings and create an atonal sort of humming, hissing noise, like a distant ocean. I dunno. I'm just speculating. And maybe you wouldn't have heard it if you hadn't lifted the cover of the keyboard.
My only personal experience with the piano in BeamNG, was when I ran over it with the Wentward DL-40 (proper name?) bus, and I heard the sound of like someone mashing down the keys randomly, followed immediately by the sound of breaking wood!
BTW... this is one of the reasons I don't leave my own musical instruments just laying around on the freeway on the West Coast, or anywhere else for that matter! LOL
