It has nothing to do with electric vehicles themselves and everything to do with Tesla being a relatively small company with subpar quality control. The Chevy Bolt, Nissan Leaf, and BMW i3 (which, I will concede, is ugly, technologically outdated, overpriced, and generally the worst EV currently sold in the US right now) are just as acceptable quality wise as any other vehicle in their respective model lineups.

You can make one yourself, you know. Just move your saved config to a folder in your mods folder and add an info_customclassic_shortbody.json file.

I deeply dislike you and most of the things you stand for, but you complain a lot about the devs removing some configs for the D-Series, and the less you post the better:

*Laughs even harder because ICE breaks down and stops working too*

That's not all he complains about the devs doing. Can't forget the gem that is OLD SUNBURST OR RIOT! He wasn't alone there though, but it's still pretty ridiculous.

Well if we are turning the off topic section into an on topic section now...

I'm also a bit hesitant with the changes to the D-Series configs. I've mentioned many times that I want this game to be as good of a car culture sim as it is a physics sim, which means keeping in mind things like factory trim levels/options. Trucks like the D-Series just tend to have a lot of trim levels/special editions.

I really hope that the new UI can handle cars with large numbers of configs better and allow the D-Series to get more factory options. The current UI was designed back when most cars only had a couple of configs, it falls apart with the content "heavy" (relative term) vehicles.

OT, which would be off topic in this forum to make it OT in the subforum...
    Cars have wheels.

The problem is, this isn't anything like an ICE failure. After reading the article I strongly suspect that the car wasn't physically incapable of functioning, but either refused to function or was remotely locked out. The most charitable thing you can say is that this is a very innovative way for a car to strand someone. ICE cars have problems too, but every single problem (even major problem) doesn't equal an immediate, complete failure to function - and with the exception of timing belt breakage, a problem which does immediately put the car out of action, is likely electrical or electronic in nature!

I know how to make a custom config, and have many kicking around right now. But the thing is, I didn't keep particularly close track of the details of every config before the reset, specifically with regards to things like axle ratios and brake pads that can escape notice despite being important, as well as cosmetic details like grille & bumper colors. Plus, many of the surviving configs received cosmetic changes during the refresh. So while I could revive each of the removed configs to some degree, it wouldn't be the same as their being official configurations, especially with regards to testing exercises which revolve around official/canon configurations (I still fool myself into thinking that I'm planning the "Car vs. Canyon" video series, even though I know that I will never have the time nor the skill to do it in anything resembling a worthwhile way).

With the D15 Custom Classic, there is the additional factor of the regular cab version being pretty much my favorite car in the entire game, and also the only base (other than the shortbody) that makes any sense for a sports version of the D15, since the vehicle's fun-to-drive quotient varies inversely and severely with its length and weight.

As for the D15 Sport being AWD, it's just that, well, it's been that way since pretty much forever, so I was curious as to why it was changed out of the blue now.

I don't dislike you as a person, but I despise what you stand for, because what you stand for is the conversion of the world, in the name of "safety" (which you worship as though it were some kind of god) or whatever else, into a monotonous gray hell where everything is just sort of "meh" forever (but, like most modern "car enthusiasts", are absolutely in favor of letting people ride their bicycles, which are about the least safe vehicle anyone has ever attempted to use for serious purposes, anytime and anywhere). Haven't you ever heard that old saying about "those who torment us for our own good"?

Oh yes, thank you for reminding me of that ridiculous PR stunt. I don't understand how anyone could watch that and not immediately see Musk for the conman he is.

I posted them twice just for you and yet you still complain of their absence.
You talk about me and safety like I actively welcomed the enactment of the Patriot Act. The truth is, the average modern driver is really no different from the average driver of 65 years ago. He knows the basics of how a car works, but not the intricacies, and that's fine because he uses it for transportation and not much more. He'd much rather keep his life than go fast. I think you do too, you just don't like the idea that someone says you have to. If not, then please do let me know how having your head thrown at a B-pillar at a considerable speed feels.
I think I understand you now. You think that being an "enthusiast" means that if someone doesn't like something you like, then they're the enemy. Do you think most bicycle enthusiasts hate you for owning a car? No, they understand that you have the right to do that, and in most cases it doesn't interfere with what they do. Hell, most sensible car enthusiasts think the same way. You just never learned in preschool that Suzy's drawing of a flower and Billy's drawing of a dinosaur belonged on the wall right next to your drawing of a race car.
I broke my clavicle falling off a bicycle three months ago. I'd rather have that happen again than get t-boned in a Sunbird and die of blunt force trauma to the head.

Honestly one of the things I'm looking forward to the most this coming year is all of the dumb shit that you'll try to claim is killing car culture. So far I've got:
    • Electric cars
    • The U.S. Government (usually referred to by you as "The Powers that Be," "the bureaucracy," or "unelected bureaucrats")
    • Bicycles
    • People that ride bicycles
    • People that are enthusiasts of both bicycles and cars but like bicycles just a little more
    • People who own a bicycle and a car
    • Safety regulations
    • Airbags
    • Any technology created after 1993 (infotainment, backup cameras, forward collision warning, lane keep assist, electronic stability control, etc.)
    • Any car made after 1993 for having the audacity to include that technology
    • Negligent parents
    • People who bring up additional points during debates/arguments
    • People who don't modify their cars
    • People who don't like the Chevrolet Cavalier
    • Other people's constitutional rights
    • People who don't care much about cars and just use them to commute or for other simple tasks (which just so happens to make up a very large percentage of the population)
    • Anyone who has a differing opinion from yours
    • Me
    And finally, my favorite...
    • Car enthusiasts

No, I'm referring to the fact that he owns one, and that they did not have side curtain airbags.

Somehow I completely missed that post the first time and I'm not sure how. Thank you and sorry.

    You mean you didn't?

Then let them. You want airbags, have all the airbags you want. If I decide that I'm happy with the airbags that were mandatory before the side curtain mandate, or with two airbags, or that I'd rather have a roll bar and a 5-point harness, then what's that got to do with you, anyway? And if I someday decide that I really do care about airbags and want as many as possible, I'm perfectly capable of reading feature lists to determine which cars fulfill that criteria.

Or maybe I think it should be up to the individual to decide. What if someone normally thought more airbags were better, but would happily make an exception for something as epic as a Viper or Exige? Would your reaction be the same then?

Most bicycle enthusiasts, including those who call themselves car enthusiasts, are perfectly understanding of my right to plonk a car into gear and navigate from point A to point B indifferently, without joy, at a sedate speed (and slower rather than faster at night, of course), in the exact center of my lane. But how can you call yourself a car enthusiast if you think that's all driving should ever be?

Yeah. As long as everyone drives on eggshells so as not to interfere with what they do, then driving doesn't interfere with what they do. They, however, interfere plenty - especially with the enthusiast drivers they so often claim to be. But to them, that doesn't matter. All that matters is that they Have a Right, and if they want to defy all common sense in the process of using it, then the onus is on everyone else to account for that. They can try to hide behind "outdriving your sightlines" or "understanding traffic" all they want, but in the end, all or nearly all defense of road cycling boils down to this central premise.

You're completely missing the point. I'd have no problem with this hypothetical situation, because the drawings don't have any effect on each other. Now, however, if the teacher decided that simply because my drawing was of a car, the other two drawings should be placed overlapping with it, and should be placed on top so as to slightly but effectively obscure it, then that would be more of a problem, and also a much better metaphor.

Forgotten about the risk of getting hit by a car while on your bicycle, I see.

Because they are not only impractical but also inherently and incurably boring.

Along with many state and local governments too, in many well-documented and often deliberate ways. I use "The Powers that Be" for two reasons; first because most of the people on this forum are not Americans and I'm too lazy to list off every government someone on this forum might live under, but also because most countries these days are doing the same stupid things and usually under the influence of the same few people/groups.

When I can go back to fearing the oncoming lane more than I fear the shoulder (and the rightmost quarter of the lane too), and when I can go back to driving faster at night than I do in the daylight, maybe I'll admit you almost have a point.

Good metaphor I heard recently. Now I don't watch South Park, but what I heard about it is, one of the writers was a Scientologist. And everyone liked him, and thought he was a funny and cool guy - right up until the rest of the team decided to do an episode mocking Scientology, at which point he... quit in disgust, or made a big dramatic Issue out of it, or something. Like I said, I don't watch or follow the show, this is secondhand. But the point is, all the time that person was being a funny and cool guy, Scientology was still the more important thing - it just didn't become an Issue until someone else brought it up.

"Car-guy bicyclists" are the same way. They can ogle the latest Jaguar or Corvette, and tell you all about the relative merits of different engine types and drivetrain layouts, and share all kinds of old war stories about the crazy stuff they used to do in the canyons, but all the time they're drooling over Jags and telling tall tales, bicycles are still the more important thing - it just doesn't become a problem until someone complains about bicycles. They'll never even dream of wanting the "old ways" back - the ways that allowed such fast machinery to actually have a reason for being - if they have to give up cycling to make it possible.

Just for once, I'd love to see a "car-guy bicyclist" who puts the "car guy" part first. Quit canyon riding. Choose your vehicle based on what will ease the travels of others rather than on what you "have a right" to do. Take the car if you won't be home until after dark. Try to avoid areas with narrow shoulders or bad sightlines instead of expecting drivers to tiptoe around these areas out of deference to you.

If you think the last paragraph sounded fascist, then sorry, but you really are a part of why car culture is dying.

Which have made cars heavier, less tuneable, and more expensive (even if rearview cameras specifically got lost in the noise) year after year for decades now.

I want a Grant racing steering wheel!... which, if I continue to drive the car on the street, is a federal felony based on the increased possibility of harm to myself only. Yep, we sure do live in a free country, don't we now!

Infotainment: a highly distracting (ooh, it's not safe! You're obligated to hate it now!) device which overcomplicates formerly trivial operations. Backup cameras: an insufficient band-aid for poor visibility, which itself is at least partially regulatory in origin. Forward collision warning: if it's a warning, then it's yet another distracting beeper/buzzer, if it's an "assist", then at some point it is going to get someone savagely rear-ended when it slams on the brakes for a plastic bag blowing across the freeway. Lane keep assist: security vulnerability that will fight you if you have to swerve suddenly for some reason (like, say, That Guy riding his lightless, reflectorless bike 2 feet to the left of the shoulder line on a dark, narrow road while wearing all black clothes). Electronic stability control: anti-fun, anti-skill device which is well known for not being able to understand why the car is barely "oversteering" or what will happen if it suddenly understeers. Just let me turn the stupid thing off. All the way off, not lying-to-me off.

I thought this was a fairly general thing to not like, especially when we all get to put up with yet more rules because of them.

And designed at a facility in the UK. Factory might not be in UK and the cheques aren't being signed in the UK, but all the development effort is. Therefore, leave it to the Brits, though that's really an out of place comment, has shotgun looked at American comedy? Seems far more an American thing to joke at giving a car a handjob, we Brits are traditionally far more prude, oh Gertrude do go change your dress, that one's showing your knees off to shotgun

Should be noted there is a lot of car design occuring in the UK, though #brexit all the manufacturing is leaving as Brexit drives the costs up hugely, almost as if being in a massive trade union was good for the economy or something.

The government requiring you have an airbag in your car to protect your life is not the same as the government spying on you and invading your privacy in the name of "national security."
There are other people on the road besides you, and if you go out on the highway in your heavily modified car having done something wrong and you lose control, you're going to hit a few other cars and injure or kill some people. Obviously this is an extreme and unlikely scenario, but my point is that your actions can and usually will affect the lives of others.
What's the argument that you're trying to make here? That performance cars like the Viper don't need side curtain airbags? Like I already said, the Mustang, Camaro, Corvette, Challenger, and Charger all received them, and they're all still popular and selling well. Dodge stopped making the Viper because giving it a standard mid-cycle refresh (which would include but not be limited to the addition of side curtain airbags) wasn't financially viable since sales numbers had been dropping for years. The Challenger is 12 years old and shares a platform with the 2002 E-Class and it got side airbags (and the rest of the post-launch mandated safety features) because it sells.
    *cough* blatant gatekeeping *cough*
How can you call yourself a car enthusiast if you think you get to decide who's an enthusiast and who isn't?
Does the concept of a bike lane not exist up there in Alaska? Because where I live, they're common. And having been both in a car and on a bicycle several times, I can say there are rarely ever problems with the two coexisting. Even in areas where the bike lane magically disappears and cyclists are forced to ride right next to the curb, I haven't seen any accidents. You need to accept that cars are not the only vehicles that use roads, and you need to stop acting like a baby who doesn't know how to share every time you see one.
No, what would really happen is this:
The entire class is drawing pictures. Some people draw flowers, some people draw dinosaurs, and some people draw race cars. On the wall is a board where the teacher hangs everyone's drawings. There's just enough room for everyone's drawing to fit, and everyone's happy.
Except for little Charlie. Charlie thinks that only the drawings of race cars should get to be on the board, because he thinks race cars are better than dumb flowers and stupid dinosaurs. He complains to the teacher, who tells him that everyone's drawing is equally wonderful and they all belong on the board. Having not received what he wanted, little Charlie throws a fit. He lies down, and starts bawling, screaming, and kicking the floor. It's not fair, he says. Meanwhile, the entire class, including the ones who also drew race cars, either stare at him or ignore him. Even the teacher, after failing to calm him down, just lets him finish his temper tantrum hoping he'll eventually wear himself out. But he doesn't, and now twenty years later, he's still crying about how only cars should get to be on public roads to an internet forum of people who just sit there and watch him as he whines.
Which, according to common sense and traffic law, is the fault of the driver.
I'd also like to point out that after falling (due to a bungee cord that got caught in my rear wheel, which was my fault) a few drivers stopped and made sure I was OK, and did not laugh and do a burnout while yelling something about getting what I deserve, which is what I imagine you'd do.
The practicality of EVs differs based on location. In a place like Ohio, finding a place to charge them may not be that hard, but the majority of their energy comes from coal, so you aren't helping the environment very much. In California, most of the energy comes from renewable sources like wind and solar and there are charging stations everywhere, so it's a much better choice. There are only seven things in Alaska: a gas station, an oil refinery, trees, bears, mountains, ice, and a log cabin with an old guy sitting on a rocking chair on the front porch. So obviously an EV would not be a great choice there. Point is, practicality is relative.
And I don't know why I have to say this, but EVs being boring is your opinion. By saying they contribute to the death of car culture, you're basically confirming that to you car culture is entirely made up of your own opinions.
Except being a cyclist is not the same thing as being in a dangerous and insane cult. It's funny to watch you go "They thought he was a regular car enthusiast... but then, they discovered he rode a bicycle!!" like it has any significance. Being a car enthusiast does not mean you have to go all-in on cars. You can just be a person who watches Top Gear, reads Jalopnik, complains about that floating-rear-pillar thing every manufacturer does now, and gets excited when they facelift the Camry again, and you're a car enthusiast. It's not a club, or a cult for that matter, where you have to meet a certain set of criteria to be a member. If you judge someone and go "he calls himself a car enthusiast and yet he does x" then you're gatekeeping the definition.
Please do elaborate. I could use a good laugh.
Right, because back in the olden days they were designing cars with the specific intent for them to be tuned. I'm sure that mattered a lot—and still matters now—to the 8% of car buyers who tune their engines.
Not just to yourself, but to any passengers, or possibly pedestrians or other drivers.
I want a large infotainment screen so I can see Google Maps more easily!... which Shotgun Chuck will yell at me for using while complaining that he's being told he can't use something.
Backup cameras are not meant to replace or substitute looking behind you. They're meant as a tool in situations where you need as much visibility as you can get or have your view through the rear-view mirror or rear window obscured. I agree that some cars have poor rear visibility, but that's just bad/lazy design on the manufacturer's part.
Oh absolutely, but they aren't killing car culture.

Just once, I'd like to hear you middle-school-standardized-test-essay style explain to me what you think car culture means. Because clearly we are not on the same page regarding that term.

Honestly, I'm not sure what to think of electric vehicles. I got mixed feelings on them. On one hand, I'm glad people are making environmentally friendly vehicles to fight climate change, but on the other hand. Part of me thinks that they are unreliable, but that part of me may be wrong though. @SuperAusten64, If you think electric vehicles are reliable, please feel free to explain why.

Okay, you may be correct about that, but I'm not sure whether or not wind and solar power is good for cars. If wind and solar is good for cars, please explain why.

You make a good point there. I don't care that much for electric vehicles and I do think they are quite boring, but I totally agree with you about "car culture" being Shotgun Chuck's own opinion and " The Electric vehicles are boring" statement being Shotgun Chuck's opinion as well. Electric vehicles being boring is someone's opinion. It's not fact at all.

Could you please explain why @SuperAusten64 is part of the reason that car culture is "dying"?

Okay, why would you want a large infotainment screen to see Google maps while driving or what ever you do?

I totally agree with that statement. Airbags and seat belts keep people safe and I don't mind them being a requirement at all. I do think @Shotgun Chuck makes a few decent points about wanting drivers to be able to decide whether or not they want safety features in their cars, but you make good points about the government requiring you to have an airbag in your car not being the same as the government invading your privacy.

Honestly, I think backup cameras can be quite useful for people, especially if their vehicle has bad/poor/dirty/damaged mirrors.

I like driving the ETK 800 series in BeamNG.Drive, but the ESC on that vehicle can be a bit annoying sometimes. I'm totally fine with your thoughts on ESC :)

So, you're implying that @Shotgun Chuck is acting like this little Charlie character? Fair enough :p

By the way, the little Charlie scenario you made is quite entertaining :)

Honestly, you make a very good point there @SuperAusten64. I totally agree with you on the gatekeeping stuff.

Exactly, how on earth could parents kill "car culture"? That doesn't make any sense.

You make a really good point there. If a car hits a bike on the sidewalk, it's the driver's fault, especially if it's intentional.

I think you make a fair point there @Shotgun Chuck. If I was driving from Virginia to North Carolina, I would much rather take a car then a bike. The car would get me to North Carolina faster then the bike would. By the way, people also use trucks to haul loads. If you needed to haul a 5 ton load of wood, a dump truck or a flatbed/log truck would be much better then a bike. You can't use a bike or an electric car for everything.

Well, @SuperAusten64 does like debunking posts that he doesn't agree with :p

Man, you really don't like modern cars or bikes do you? Also, I'm fine with your thoughts on what @SuperAusten64 stands for even if I don't agree with them.

Anyways, to conclude this post. I think @Shotgun Chuck and @SuperAusten64 both make good points in their posts about this car stuff.

Thanks for reading this post and have a great 2020 :)
