Hello, just curious but are there current plans to add Ray Tracing to BeamNG? From my knowledge, I think it would remove the need for the Dynamic Reflections option. There should still be an option to turn on and off the Ray Tracing so you can still run it on cards without Ray Tracing capabilities.
I don't believe there are any plans to add this to BeamNG. It would be a difficult implementation that the vast majority of users would not have the graphics processing power for. I include myself in that statement, and I have an RX 5700...
For you. But think of others, I have a 1050ti so it would be impossible for me to run ray tracing. Many users don’t have the money to build supercomputers. So an option that would only be useable by a very small portion of the community wouldn’t be worth implementing.
Very true. I still think it’s a good idea, because ray tracing will most definitely become more of an affordable option in the next few years.
Our video cards are about equivalent in power. Even with ray tracing support in future AMD GPUs, I doubt anything short of a 2080 equivalent could run this game with fully implemented ray tracing at a comfortable framerate. Currently we can just about make it accessible with implementations in older games like Quake, where the GPU is barely at work in the first place, I imagine it would be very taxing in a game like BeamNG.
Ray Tracing is a bit of a gimmick really whats the point in it only limiting yourself to Nvidia cards, I really dont see the point in it, its not worth the hype....
Adding ray tracing would imply a complete rewrite of the game engine code, thus making it impossible or extremely hard and time spending to do. There are more important things devs will add to the game before ray tracing, because, let's face it, it's not used by a lot of players.

Ray tracing isn't an Nvidia technology. It's been used for decades in animated films, and it's only now starting to be implemented in real time in video games. Nvidia has taken the first steps in the gaming world with their own brand of ray tracing, RTX, but the technology likely will evolve to become affordable and widespread (AMD is working on their own version of it). It's just that currently, we don't yet have the means to make it easy to handle in demanding games.
The big downside here is the tremendous rewrite of the graphics engine that something like this would require, not to mention the fact that it would need to keep the old render engine in there for the rest of us lowly fellows who don't have cards that can handle this yet. Sure, right this second it is an NVidia proprietary technology, but that has just been this last year and a bit. I think last gen AMD was just caught off guard that NVidia was ready to release something like this already (even if their cards could barely run it). This year though we basically already have a 100% confirmation that not only are we getting new NVidia cards that should be a big boost over the 2000 series, but AMD is also bringing ray tracing to the table with their cards this year as well, not to mention the fact that both the new Xbox and Playstation are slated to be getting ray tracing as well. In 10 years time there might not even be normal rendering engines in use anymore as all games will just be raytraced... however... right now we are at a transitioning point. Right now "most" high end cards are incapable of running raytracing or being very poor at it and the ones that can are WAY out of the rest of our budgets. However, in the next 2 years, the price for these cards will come WAY down and by then most of us will have the capability to run some sort of real time ray tracing... so where am I going with this... IF... and that's a big if... IF... BeamNG has not released its 1.0 version and come out of its pre released state by 2023... then it may actually be a good idea to look into ray tracing... THEN. ... but right now? It's just too darn early to adopt such a technology unless they can somehow figure out how to implement such a thing with minimal coding (which I don't see happening... but I have been wrong before) as it just isn't worth it.
i'm seeing a lot of misinformed assumptions, 1st of all all gpu can run rtx or dxr rtx cards only have dedicated cores for it, in the future it will be cheaper and a rtx 2060 as a low end - mid end card is 350$ and we are about to have ampere or big navi which will make it cheaper, and rtx isn't a gimmick. in fact this game could benefit, the inside lighting is meh, and the reflections are (no offense) weird and nasty i turn em off.
altough id love it, its kinda true that youd have to rework the engine.. the game would need a modern materials system, DX12 for dxr suppport... an then the question would be which part of the lighting to replace by raytracing.. reflections (like bfV) would be an obvious choice, AO and Ambient lighting (like metro exodus) would also be great, shadows (like Tomb raider, cod) meh.. u dont really notice it but it would definitly be an improvement over the current, rather lackluster shadows, Fully Raytraced isnt possible with current hardware
And it'd just be unfair if all of a sudden you're spending money on a graphics card or maybe a whole new PC because one game (or the only for some people) you play is an RTX exclusive. In my case, I would either have to buy a new card and have it installed or buy a new PC. Would I like a new PC? Yes. Could I settle for just a new graphics card? Yes. Can I/am I willing to pay for either? Nope. That being said, no RTX exclusive.
bru ... where's your brain just because they dont get an rtx they dont lose users smh tf u talking about lol you dont have to buy a gpu just because you dont have an rtx, the whole point is eventually most gpu will have rtx or rt hardware in them. and it is fair you get what you pay for, and it's just a graphics feature so stop acting like its unfair and grow up
