Well, Saab was never great with money even before GM (which is part of the reason why GM bought them in the first place), but yes, it can be said that GM was responsible for Saab's death. They were doing the absolute best one could do with the GM2900 and Epsilon platforms. The cost was so high because they had to put a lot of money into improving the platforms GM gave them.
SuperAusten has me on ignore confirmed. Again, the cost was high because of redundant engineering and purchasing of customer-transparent components like seat frames and electrical wires, losing economies of scale and frequently just plain paying too much - and if the Saab-specific components turned out to be less reliable than what the rest of GM was using, that was yet another cost. On top of this, the cars themselves didn't really stand apart; the basic models were only OK-ish, while the sports models had neither the power nor the finesse of other small-to-midsize near-luxury sport sedans; a lineup like that was never going to break the MercedesAudiBMW stranglehold on that market. If they could have consolidated their purchasing function, and some of the engineering, into the GM mothership while still keeping enough independence to avoid becoming just another outlet for hasty badgelifts, then maybe they could have survived longer, but they really weren't in a good place overall and that would have been difficult to change.
i really like that Ford thanked them for it. It also sadens me too see that Holden is gone but it was sadly inevitable thanks to theyr lineup of cars
Every once in a while, GM decides that they have too many good car brands and have to kill a few off.
After looking into Holdens again i kinda want one but how to get them over here? American cars are easy to import but not austrailian ones. Maybe through the UK?
The problem is that those rules apply to the UK but not to Germany so it would look diffrent here. The thing is we can get the Camaro wich has the same engine as the Holden Ute so maybe emmission testing shouldnt be that big of a deal?

May I suggest Dump truck 1 ton. I don't know about fun, but exciting for sure, especially at 65 mph, if it'll get there. Super reliable, manual and $1000 under budget. Best part is it "all work good." But actually, maybe a 2000's Mustang? Also not very unique though. Unique and reliable is not easy to find at $5000.
said who? every volvo tech and volvo owner i have talked to has said they near bulletproof, even the mid 2000's ones
