Hey, Technology Connections! I love that guy. In answer to your question, the majority of the time the VHS-esque filters are used, subtlety isn't the target. The creators in question want to make the video look as exaggeratedly dated and/or retro as they can. Also, the distortion and lines that define the VHS often did look about as bad as the filter—but only while pausing or rewinding. It's a formative part of the VHS experience, but can't really be worked into modern digital video authentically. Also relevant, some background on one of those filters:

It might be lazy writing. However, I wanna make a plot someday where there's 2 versions of Lily. One new, one "old". The old Lily would love Improvement Pill and political stuff and the new Lily would like other stuff. I'll see what I can do with my writing.
As far as self-improvement. I actually don't mind it much. I just have problems with Improvement Pill. I've talked about him before, so I won't ramble about him. As for politics. The devs have been banning people more lately, so I'd rather not talk about it.
Apparently you do mind because you've spent the last 60 pages complaining to strangers about people that want people to improve on themselves. Think of how much you could have done instead of spewing nonsense on a forum about a video game.
