I think it should be in the repo, as otherwise you risk it becoming a niche thing, and also that you should keep only one car with scratch configs worth say 5 more than their un-scratchable counterparts, as no one likes what I've coined the Kashira dilemma.
Or even "WIP Paint Scratch System"

The kashira dilema is exactly what i want to avoid.
also, initially this mod will most likely be released on the forum, as ive said previously im using a dirt showdown textures and unless i magically gain the knowledge of making myself a nice seamless transparent scratched metal texture, this mod wont be allowed on the repo as a result.
But since i cant put it on the repo in the first place, i might just leave the scratched files overwrite over the official ones, as duplicating everything is kinda a pain in the arse.
The easiest thing would be letting it be overwritten by my modded files but its not recommended, updates breaks stuff and who knows, devs dont like this for the repo.
Other thing would be duplicating some configs/or all of them.
And the 3rd one which i wanna avoid is... simply duplicating the covet....

    yeah, personally I believe:
    1. overwrite = bad
    2. new car = bad
...which leaves the config with the different parts option

Hello! I think there are some thing that started with: "Its really hard to implement", but after a while, some fans are made/make these. Like BeamMP. Its started with a mod, but if a fan can make this, I believe the devs are too, in near future. Also the engine sounds are started as mods, then now they are official content. I saw, there is a mod (WIP) for scrathces. I believe, one day it will go to offical content (after the mod gets finished :D)

So you changed the thread name to "WIP" so it's going to be a skin?

I was thinking that wouldn't the paint scratching just be tiremarks except on cars and from objects not tires?

Eh, that's how its supposed to be executed if it is ever to be released directly from the devs.

To those of you who believe it isn't possible to achieve scratches on paint, please look at my thread from a few years back. https://www.beamng.com/threads/scratch-decals.34252/

Here, you can see somebody has created a working example, and while it isn't great, with more refinement, or if the devs can use this system some way, scratch decals could become a thing in the near future.

There are always going to be limitations for the game. But overcoming them is what being a developer is all about. The devs have surprised us with tons of features we never thought possible, and will continue to do so throughout BeamNG's lifetime

I was hoping to make more progress, but i didnt expect to buy myself my 1st car in the past week also.
Ive barely been at home in the past week, just working on my car to get it road legal.
Very fun experience, but its been keeping me very busy these past weeks.

The covet was almost done last time i worked on it tho.
I dont think i posted this pic here, but on community screenshots about a week or 2 ago.

I have the sides done, fenders and doors done.
I still need to finish some inner frame scratches, tailgate, roof, bumpers and side skirts, pillars as well.
Not sure if im even gonna bother with mirrors.

I wanted to evolve this even more and make some plastic scratches textures instead of shiny metal scratches, but i suck at making textures. so for now im just gonna use the same texture for everything.

Mirrors tend to break off, so I wouldn't worry about them until the very end. It looks great so far and congrats on your first car! Tell us what it is in the next progress update :)

Sorry. I only looked at the first 2 pages and saw people arguing about it. I wanted to let them know about it. (not for self promotion. although it kinda seems like it)

Hope we can see Crashmaster finish this. we could possibly see this in the base game if it works out well.

Hey. How's the scratches coming along? have you progressed much? or been too busy. I know life gets in the way of modding.
