Turbo boost cpu laptops

I was wondering what turbo boost means, my cpu is 2.5ghz with 3.1ghz at turbo boost.
how does it work ?
do i have to activate it ?
See my banana test bellow it says 2.50 not 3.1 ?

thanks but the banana benchmark is not what the thread is for, its info on turbo boost

 

Did you click it? It's a post I made explaining turbo boost because people didn't understand it there either.
