I dont think that multi gear EVs will ever become mainstream. The benefits for mainstream cars are to little to justify the increase in cost, complexity and reliability issues.
I think the ignition coil on the classic *cough cough* shitbox *cough* beast is very sick, recently it has been very difficult to start, then today after driving a bit it the started to loose spark but it would pick up again. Two minutes later it did it again and stalled, it absolutely refused to start so i had it towed home. A quick check had confirmed its the electrics acting up and was still getting fuel (at first when it happened i thought it was running out of fuel, since the gauge had long been broken). I had all the ignition rebuilt but the mechanic said the coil didn't need replacing though im taking what he said with a grain salt. It doesn't help the battery is old and weak so tomorrow whilst the car is at another mechanic im going to buy a new one
pull the coil out, and give it 4.5 imperial whacks on your calibrated workbench. if you don't have an imperial one, 7 whacks on a metric bench will do the same job.
I dont even think whacking the bastard will work, that coil is over 20 years old, hell it might even be the factory original one, that'd make 48 years old ! Hmmmmm maybe some duck tape will work then

Update on the "old brown datsun". Wasn't the coil or electrics at all, the fuel pump had packed a sad and given up on life. That fuel that squirted out the jets when i yanked the throttle cable was probably the last little bit of fuel left in the bowl. I guess i shouldn't have asked my pop (who is severely blind) to check for sparks when i cranked the engine, the fuel filter had clear glass around it and i should've noticed that the petrol level in it was progressively getting lower and lower. I am told that that is the original pump too, it did well to last all these years. When the car was towed to the workshop today one of the mechanic quipped that i broke it again, Maybe im cursed ?
i'm seriously considering one of these bad boys as a first car. anyone here have experience with the shortstar/any g-body cars? i don't know if it'd be a huge mistake or not
Northstars have head studs that are too small causing head gasket failure. Since the shortstars are just Northstars with 2 cylinders chopped off I would stay away from those as well. The Intrigue with the 3800 is a far better choice if you want an olds of that era. Much more reliable and they even have good aftermarket support from ZZP too. If you specifically want a G-Body car, Buicks are good and can be found cheap in good condition with the 3800. Tldr: Get something with the 3800.
I am so sick of suburb drivers treating the public roads like their personal videogame. Weaving in and out of traffic at 100mph, running lights (As in blatantly ignoring their existance, not just misjudging a yellow), constantly honking and yelling out their window at everything... I swear the safest improveme to public roads isn't more tech in cars, it's having driving tests that actually mean something and need renewal and actually enforcing laws with methods other than red light cameras and parking tickets. I can't even get gas at an empty gas station without someone suddenly deciding that they absolutely need to use the specific pump I am at and screaming before I even pump 5 gallons of gas (yes, this actually happened today). Can I just move to a rural area now? It must be nice... /rant
Sounds like fun, country people here always complain that Perth is a madhouse and should be avoided at all costs (you only get one or two crazies a week now, its really not as bad as it used to be). I'd love to see their reactions if they went to an American city, they'd do backflips im sure ! Actually which city are you in ?
