I don't think the devs had any plans on adding Licensed vehicles because royalties are $$$ but I'm still seeing some desire from the community to have favorite irl cars brought into the game with dev-approved jbeams.

As suggested by the title would having individual Licensed cars as a dlc offset or cover the cost of the royalties? Maybe the community could vote on the next dlc vehicle so the devs could estimate the demand and price it accordingly? Just tossing the idea out there.

    Thoughts?

There is a reason why games with licensed cars don't have realistic damage models like this, besides all the time it would take. Manufactures don't want to see their cars all mangled up like this in video games. Especially when the vehicle ends up in, what would be in real life, a fatal crash. They would also be very strict on how the car deforms so the end result probably wont be realistic, as they want to show their car is better than others.

That's a really good point. Now that I think about it I haven't seen a game with crazy crash physics with licensed vehicles.

What about vehicles by defunct brands though? How would that work?

But i think it would be better if beamng continued with imaginary vehicles for the sake of consistency, plus i really like their cars and their brands.

Just for the sake of clarity. No manufacturer ever said they dont want their games added due to damage eve in history. Its just a popular assumption.

Having real cars in BeamNG would "look" out of place. Not mentioning license cost and reqirements that the manufacturer sets and so on. Beam has had "made up" cars since the beginning. Just throwing in a reallife car, e.g. a Golf or something non Supercar-ish, would just break the "lore" of the game. I don't mind mods bringing RL cars into the game, but I wouldn't like it, IF it was official content. It would just be weird.

I'm not going to try and find a direct quote from a most likely private contract between a AAA video game developer and a major automotive manufacturer pertaining to depictions of damage, but I have a hard time imagining an automotive manufacturer licensing their design and trademark to a company that:
    1. Is relatively small and unconnected, which may be taken as untrustworthy.
    2. Plans to adapt the vehicle design in a way that will allow it to roll over and be mechanically and structurally damaged virtually without limit (where premodeled damage could be manually limited).
    3. Can be modified freely by the playerbase to include any content, including NSFW or culturally/racially insensitive content (which would not last on the forums/Discord, but would have a lasting impact on the intellectual property via other platforms).
    4. Has created content (scenarios, and the traffic mode police) depicting or implying illegal activities.
    5. Has produced only one game, which is broadly perceived by the public as being all about crashing. All told, any vehicle produced by such a partnership would be wrecked within 30 seconds of driving by upwards of 90% of users. Even if the manufacturer is proud of how their vehicle performs, and is equally happy with how the virtual facsimile performs, almost none of the users will notice.
...and all of that at a reasonable, indie-friendly rate.

To add to this, I remember a LONG LONG time ago reading a thread written by a Dev on the Forza Motorsport 4 team about a discussion between them and a particular manufacturer about... literally everything Occam mentioned. The Dev had noted that they "could" have made the damage much more realistic, and apparently HAD much more mailable cars in the game, but due to the restrictions put in place by multiple (probably all honestly) manufacturers that the damage model they had had to be turned down to almost nothing at all... and as time has gone on, you may have noticed that the damage model in Forza has gotten worse and worse visually? That is no accident my friend... and it has nothing to do with the Dev team being incapable either.

Oh, I am willing to bet they were one of, if not THE WORST ones to deal with on that issue.

They are ALWAYS the worst ones when it come to copyright. It's so expensive and they're super restrictive. For example in Gran Turismo Sport they limited the decals we could put on their cars.

Even in reality, Deadmau5 had his Ferrari taken back by them after having it wrapped in a Nyan cat livery as they didn't like it... Purrari lived a short life

Along with the licencing issues, real life vehicles would be SUPER out of place in BeamNG and would absolutely SUCK. Beam has its own lore, story, world and universe. To have this destroyed because some kids wan't a "Lambo" would destroy the game imo. Best keep to the amazing and imaginary world of Beam with its wide variety and ever expanding roster of highly detailed lore friendly cars.

Ferrari could probably take you to court if you dont make the genital size of the driver playermodel in games big enough to brag about it.

They inflate to act as airbags in case damage to the ferrari is detected. Ferraris automatically deduct x10 the pricetag of the repair for the car to the owner to cover the expense of maintaining a ferrari.
