funny, i just disconnected from internet, first thing steam did was ask if i wanted to go offline or retry connecting (also your password and stuff does HAVE to be saved for offline mode to function, otherwise it won't let you go into offline mode ) EDIT: neither the bat script or the -offline command line thingy work, so just make sure you have the password and username saved, if you don't then steam will not start in offline mode
I wasn't happy having to download/integrate steam but so far so good. I'm a noob to steam so the jury will be out for awhile. The absolute control of my purchase is of upmost concern.
I'd like a refund please. I purchased this game because it was DRM-free and thus, not a Steam exclusive. I hated Steam before I used it (on principle) and it only gets worse the more I do use it. For example, if I put it in offline mode, it asks me to restart Steam and upon restarting, it says "Can't connect to the Steam servers" and closes. It doesn't matter if it is a personal issue. I never have that issue with the actual DRM free games I own where I have an installer (like Kerbal Space Program, whose developers actual implemented a really neat update system..). So yeah, refund please, unless you are going to maintain an installer I can download and use at my leisure, not Valve's. EDIT: I find it funny that the title is "Steam keys: available for alpha testers". That should read "Steam keys: mandatory for customers". There is a world of difference between something that is available and something that is required. EDIT #2: Before anyone thinks I'm just being pissy. I don't use Windows, so I can't even play this game. If it had been Steam-exclusive, I wouldn't have purchased it (like I haven't purchased SpinTires, which is also Steam-exclusive).
Opposed to many other Games released on Steam BeamNG.drive is completly DRM-free. Steam is only used to download and update it and doesn't need to run to start BeamNG.drive. You can move the BeamNG.drive folder to another computer and it will start without problems.
It doesn't matter if the game doesn't require Steam to run. It does require it to acquire the game files (a key part to the game) in the first place, and acquiring updates to them (an important part of the purchase). It is not "completely DRM-free", which is what I and others paid for.
Cool! Can't wait for more! Awesome video there btw! Take your time, don't rush the releases, too many game developers do that! Quality over quantity! Keep up the good work, man! Oooh, that's awesome! Things like this should be in the gamewiki! I love wikis! <3
This game unlike others on Steam runs without steam running at all so if you don't like Steam you can just run it when you need to update the game. To me this seems like a non issues because of this games ability to run without steam. Steam is just an easier faster way to replace the old updater, although it is a tad bigger. It's fine that you don't like steam but there's no reason to ignore what is an amazing game just because of it because you can avoid using it for about 95% of the time.
Because some people act on their principles and support things that don't directly benefit them. Same reason why I, at one point, owned nearly every game in the GOG.com catalogue. I couldn't play them, but I was supporting DRM-free gaming so others could. - - - Updated - - - It's not an easier, faster way of providing a zip of the game files. After all, that's clearly all that is needed if it runs fine without Steam. This could be 100% automated.
:/ all previous updater/download systems have completely failed with huge popular updates, and download speeds were in the 0.25kb/s to 100KB/s ranges (mostly to the lower speeds) and on the pre-race update the slowed down updates lasted a whole week for some, the beamng server's just can not take the load of keeping so many people up to date well (especially with big updates like the pre-race udpate), hence the switch to steam. so yes, steam IS a faster way to keep beamng up to date, as youll actually be able to update in less then a day (provided your internet speeds themselves can handle it) and it is easier, as lots of people also had problems with anti-virus and isp's blocking the beamng updater (well, mostly anti-virus) causing corrupt downloads, steam bypasses all of this but if that's your opinion, that's your opinion (only horrible thing on steam is the workshop, has horrible moderation) (although, in terms of beamng, it actually isn't an opinion, it is a FACT that the previous updating systems have completely failed, and that steam wont' have any problems that the previous ways of updating did)
There is no difference between the old updater system (which required a serial key and internet connection to get the game files) and Steam (which requires a serial key and internet connection to get the game files), except that Steam is much faster and more stable. As others have said, once you have obtained the updated game through Steam, you can move the BeamNG.drive folder somewhere else (even to a different computer) and run the game completely Steam-free.
Hi Reddustone with a little effort the PS3 controller can be made to work on beamNG. If you have heard about MotionInJoy horror stories I can understand being wary of this method BUT the one I used employs the older version and has no need to "be online" for it to work. I have Win 7 and it works, no dual shock feature or six axis function but does BeamNG even support that....? http://www.hardcoreware.net/how-to-use-a-ps3-controller-in-windows-8/ Revocide
Right, because downloading a zip of a few gigs worth of data can happen anywhere near 4 MB/s through a Web browser. On the other hand steam can hit those speeds and more. Hell forget all the people telling you to download the gave and move it. You can tell steam where you want it that way it'll keep it up to date as you desire and it'll be where you want it. Stream really isn't that bad, sure it's not perfect and the service goes down a decent bit but you don't need to worry about any of that with this game. It's not like this is Sim City 4.
I have downloaded 320GB+ of GOG games through my browser at 7MB/s which is the maximum download speed for my internet connection. Steam never exceeds 1MB/s. Sorry, but my experience is the inverse of your statement. Everything downloads significantly slower for me through Steam than any HTTP talking application I have used. - - - Updated - - - Except it happens with Steam too.
Thank you. Please make a big deal about returning to providing a non-Steam version if you do, so I will hear about it and can purchase the game and support you again.
Which is irrelevant. I can still download faster through my browser than Steam and it has been that way since I started using Steam ~2 years ago. Everyone seems to think that their good experience dictates everyone else's. That's not how it works. EDIT: To clarify why I started using Steam, I was getting Steam keys from DRM-free bundles and figured I should actually use it so my complaints were from experience. There have been a lot. The worst of which was not being able to play a game with my girlfriend because I couldn't start 2 Steam instances on the same machine (we were multi-seating at the time). An unusual configuration, sure, but it was still a show-stopper which wouldn't have happened with a non-Steam version of the game. And I did contact Steam and they said such limits were intentional. - - - Updated - - - Alright, I've subscribed to the RSS feed for it so I will see it. Best of luck with BeamNG.drive. It does look really cool (damage models FTW).
