Not really. At the end of the day they are both products that mostly require knowledge and manpower. The ability to easily replicate the computer made thing does mean you can spread those hours over more people (therefore charging 5$ for a mod, instead of the at the very least hundreds you'd pay for a painting.) You could argue the same thing against charging for video games, or any software. Only involves knowledge and man hours but no raw materials, and with digital distribution they never take any form for you other than 0s and 1s.
picnic is dev worthy and worth paying for. im more salty about the 5 hours meshslap people be trying to sell for 10$+ --- Post updated --- was but a very flawed way to compare it by me. yeah ik that. but since when do people think its alright to sell mods for almost the price of the game lol.
Oh definitely, stealing a model and slapping it on an existing jbeam shouldn't be worth any kind of money. But as soon as there is at least a custom model and an edited jbeam, it might be worth it.
People trying to make money out of selling low quality trash for more than they're worth is a thing as old as the world, and far from just limited to mods (or computer based things for that matter) It doesn't make paid mods a problem in itself.
probably me that hasnt actively looked for this stuff. to me its pretty new. i never heard about paid mods and the only time i did hear about it was with the whole skyrim workshop drama that happened a few years ago. im all for supporting dev worthy content. but low effort trash is something people needs to keep an eye out for. and from what im reading its nothing new. its only new to me.
Maybe not especially mods but overpriced software or things like that. --- Post updated --- Also i'm pretty sure @Iamthelaw105 's mods are illegal, those look like forza models and they shouldn't be used legally, but if it's for money it's even worse. I also doubt they aren't meshslaps as might make people think the "100% Jbeamed" in the description.
100% jbeamed lol generic term used by any crappy meshslapper to describe the car has any form of jbeam. would looooove to see the actual jbeam of these cars hes tryina sell with a "100% jbeam" lol and thats ignoring 100% of his stolen models and textures
in theory, paid mods are a great idea. it is a great way to support your favorite mod developer. in practice, though, all of them get leaked if they are worth a grain of salt. in other games, it is way worse. i'm thinking especially of the fsx developer who got caught implementing straight up malware in his payware mods and the captain sim situation.
Artificial demand. That's why consumerism is bad Unfortunately, we are on a slippery slope Cannibalism is also a thing as old as the world. Eating food is not a problem in itself doesn't mean cannibalism should be legalized in modern society. Double illegal. They are real-world vehicles. The content maker must get permission from the vehicle manufactures before making a profit by selling the content, since BMW/Audi/Lamboghini also spent tons of work of designing their vehicles. In the "Note!", "higher poly model so its propably spiking on some points after crashing" Spoiler: propably Its a Forza model, thus, permission must also be granted from Turn 10/Playground Games as well.
Christ some Modelers want upwards of $100 dollars for an ATS or ETS2 mod. I understand that you want to be compensated for hard work, that's completely fine. However, especially for Beamng, I would want the person charging for a mod, to have had mods of which were up there in quality (for example @LucasBE ) which were not behind a paywall. Personally I have payed for mods (ATS if it matters), but only after seeing how good it was, either through a Youtubers/word of mouth (I found Jon Ruda's ATS mods through Jeff Favignano's videos), or by reviews by others. In the end, it's up to the user, but I personally support paying for QUALITY items.
bruh most of these mods are like $5 or less. if they're dev quality and they're nice, why not? my only issue is "what if modder never updates again" and a game update comes out like 6 months later and breaks the car? but then again it's like only $5 so who cares
omg whats wrong with y'all, this community gonna kill this game. If you think that mod is too expensive, then whats the problem? Just dont buy it. Lucas deserves 3.80 euros for his mod. And maybe iamthelaw105's prices are little bit high, but i think he deserves it too. He spend much time doing them.
I think 95% of people on the forums are smart enough to know what to spend their money on. Something worthwhile. Engine swap mods costing anything over 10 cents simply wouldn't fly. There are a bazillion tutorials WITH PICTURES to easily do them, with a large community of modders willing to help (MFD being one of the major servers). As for scratch made vehicle mods, obviously those will go for alot more. As more paid modders come in, prices will probably stay around 3-5USD, as lucas has already set a very, very high standard for a very reasonable price. As for leakers? IF the mod gets leaked, by the time it has been leaked the modder will most likely have profited very well from said mod. There are ways to counter leaking, of course. Such as uploading a link to whatever payment method is used, as major mod sites delete duplicate mods automatically (from what I hear). I don't see all mods becoming paid, but I do see quality vehicle and map mods becoming paid, which I don't see as such a bad thing. This will bring a nice incentive to modders who haven't previously had the motive to produce anything. As for the meshslaps with mediocre PBR, those will probably self-regulate, as they're just not worth anything over maybe a dollar. Still can't wrap my head around the idea of people who pay ~$15 a month for mediocre truck meshslaps lol.
You can’t justify selling crap meshslaps for over double the price of Lucas’ dev quality Picnic I’m 99.9% sure you don’t have the right to sell these models which you presumably stole from some sort of game. (CSR2?)
https://beamng.com/game/support/policies/eula/ § 3 (3.1) ...you are not entitled to ... exploit the Game or any of its parts for any commercial purpose § 10 (10.4) The user should not setup special usage terms or license fees if the User Generated Content is distributed or advertised within the beamng.com website and services of BeamNG. So as I understand it, you are not allowed to sell a mod if it contains any vanilla content. And even if it doesn't, you can't sell or advertise it here on the forum.
Weird, @Car_Killer said in the picnic thread that it was not against the forum rules and thus couldn't stop it even if they wanted to.
that EULA is heavily outdated sadly. I've had discussions with various BeamNG staff members that all agree with paid mods and have no issues with them. Some of them support the likes of the Picnic being paid, etc. Heck, even tdev wanted to allow paid mods on the repo at some point. Sadly that project has been abandoned as the new repository project is nowhere near finished. I think it's fair for someone that spends months of their time to make decent content to consider it their job in a way. Keep in mind that mods being free is a privilege. Nobody can for a modder to publish their work and even less to do so for free. Just my 2c.
It doesn't need to be, people that are as good as Lucas are rare and those are basically the only mods i'd pay for.
