back before the repo appeared in game, it could feature real brands, like the Zakspeed Capri, mythbusters Cadillac, and the Ford Crown Vic, ther where all removed some time after it became available in game, or maybe earlier

you cant find them on the repo anymore now anyways, since they had to be removed, but if you look on archived versions from many years ago you can see there where irl vehicles on the repo

Why? Because it certainly isn't a friggin' right. Food, shelter and safety is a right. Additional, optional content for a driving sim is not a right, not even in a legal sense. Privilege is exactly what I would call it.

I sense that given your inability to afford 3 Euros, you probably weren't going to do that either.

This applies if you're taking commercial gain from copyrighted content, but the Picnic (the content this thread is clearly in response to) doesn't infringe on anything.

And for those spewing the terrible notion that non-tangible goods aren't worth paying for, perhaps you need reminding that BeamNG.Drive itself is software, and by definition, a non-tangible good.

Crashmaster's assertion that modding isn't a job, shows a clear lack of understanding of what time/effort/understanding means to a person. A job is something you do to earn income, whether that income puts food on your table or beer money in your pocket, is completely irrelevant and no-one's business. If Lucas makes money from his work, then for the moment that work is his job. I work in the IT services industry in the enterprise space, and yet there are people who do what I do for a living for fun, running homelabs in their living rooms. Does that mean I don't have a job... because some choose to do it as a hobby?

And we're going to sit here and pretend that this thread wasn't created to gather as many paid mods as possible so that they can be leaked? There is no moral high ground in leaking paid mods... This isn't Robin Hood taking from the rich to feed the poor... This is software pirates taking a Beam mod from a normal person to give to a bunch of entitled cry-babies.

So only food, shelter and safety can be classified as a right? And the right to repair should be renamed "privilege to repair"?

That list was not exhaustive, obviously. As an aside, I am a huge advocate for the right to repair, because its impact has benefits that are orders of magnitude further reaching than a free Francais Baguette for the crashy crash game.

Those are clear infringements on copyrighted content, or abuse of licensed material. Content like the Picnic does not apply here, that is my point. Making money from someone else's work, where it breaches a license agreement or infringes on copyright law, should not be allowed. I would even go as far to say that low effort paid content is justifiable, so long as it doesn't breach those two restrictions. The market determines what such content is worth.

This thread is not anti-Picnic. Please read a few previous pages and they were mostly discussing about overpriced meshslap mods.

They were, but that was tangential. The whole recent discussion revival on whether paid content should exist originated from the release of the Picnic. Most of the people who are complaining on here were kicking off in that thread.

Interestingly most of those people were the ones making demands on what the car should be, before it transpired that the content wasn't free.

this is getting into a completely different topic, where the definition of "right" depends on what is going to be decided by the government. (the main argument for RtR being considered necessary is upholding free market competition, etc.)
it is already established that food and shelter are a necessity to live, and thus should it be treated as a right.

but having free access to user-made content for a game? it's certainly not necessary for life, probably not necessary to keep socio-economic structures in order, i'd say it's fair to call it a privilege (though some may even say it's infringing on a hobbyist's right to income).

And since this is a car he should show us how it sounds. For alot of people a sound can make or break a mod.

That's a strawman fallacy. He never said that food, shelter and safety are the only rights. They were used as examples. There are alot of rights such as the right to vote, the right to not be discriminated against, the right to walk on public property. (And to be extra clear, these are examples of a few rights, and not a complete list of all rights. I am not saying that anything not listed previously is a privilege.)
But free game content is not a right, it is a privilege.

Yeah i wasnt refering to the picnic in this one since im well aware there is no such thing as cherrier in real life (virtually every post i made here is not supposed to reference the picnic its supposed to reference cheap online meshslaps for sale please everyone stop thinking im trying to diss the picnic its a good mod)
    --- Post updated ---
Also since im tired of watching people debate and try and discredit actual users by name, which im against, may i change the subject to a think tank on several interesting questions i could raise that could give community input on what we feel the future of paid mods could be? possibly saving future authors controversey by getting our opinion on things out of the way now?
(keep in mind this list is not designed to give anti paid mod sentiment, these are legit questions i have seen raised on multiple seperate games relating to this issue, and in general on how it may relate to beang)

-If a mod is free, and an addon for this mod, which could be skins, engines, parts, etc, is created by a different, independant author and is made to be a paid mod, is the author of the original mod entitled to a portion of the revenue? (assuming this addon only adds content to the authors mod, does not use any content already in game, and fully requires the first mod to be downloaded to work)

-If a paid mod is broken and publically abandonned by its creator (the mod creator has gone onto the forums saying they will not under any circumstance fix or revive the mod) is it moral for an individual user to fix this mod and post it publically? (assuming the author has said they are allowed to fix the mod in the first place) would they have the right to sell this mod in the same manner that it was originally sold? would the creator be entitled to a split of the revenue?

-If a free mod is abandonned in the same manner as the example above, and in turn fixed with creator permission, is it moral for this fix to be placed behind a paywall? is this choice up to the person who fixed it or the original creator? does the original creator deserve a split of the funds from the paywall?

-If a paid mod is made free, and someone bought it the day before it became free without anything being posted saying it would be free, do they deserve a refund? what about two days? what could be considered a reasonable cutoff where a refund would no longer be applicable for people who purchased the mod?

-If a paid mod is purchased, yet no longer supported, should a refund be implemented (assuming there where no prior warnings it was broken), what if there where prior warnings it would not be compatable? should paid mods that no longer function be taken down to avoid such situations? if so, whos decision should that be, the creators or another external body?

-If a free mod relies on another mod to function, and that initial mod becomes placed behind a paywall, what right does the developer of the free mod have to protect themselves? (assuming the removal of the now paid mod makes this free mod non functional), assume now the second mod is instead a paid mod, and the original mod becomes no longer supported, does the developer of this addon mod have any right to republish a fix for the first mod in order to keep their addon mod functional? How far does their responsibility to their customers extend if the creator of the first mod has completely abandonned the project?

-Do the answers to any of these questions change based on whether or not the paid is paid in a one time payment or through a monthly subscription? why or why not?

these are just a few english teacher styled questions i had thought of while reading some of the arguments here, as well as other places, if you have any opinion on any of these questions, please feel free to respond, even if you think your opinion is insignificant or wrong, theres probably many others thinking the same thing, all opinions on these questions are valid, and all answers should be treated as such.

debating answers is fully acceptable, but please do not devolve into insults or arguments in relation to these, they are simply talking points and exist only to possibly help give mod creators insight on some more complex scenarios involving paid mods

I think that this should be up to the author of the original mod. The original mod author could say that no paid addons for the mod is okay, or that any addon, paid or not is okay. Or they could work something out in private if they wanna complicate things. I think ideally, a paid mod should be completely standalone and run on its own. Otherwise it risks breaking over time. So I suppose a paid addon for a mod is even worse than a mod for a vanilla vehicle in that regard. The best thing to keep in mind in order to avoid being scammed is to only buy mods which are independent from both vanilla content / other mods.

Mods have a quite long expiration date as long as they are completely standalone. Its mainly mods that rely on vanilla content that breaks over time. Sure, a standalone mod could over time get dated. For example if it use an older design standard. For example not using engine mount / drive axle components, or pre PBR materials (or rather whatever they implement next, to further increase the standard). This however technically doesn't mean the mod is broken. It will still function in the same way it did when it was purchased. Same thing here. To avoid being scammed, get fully standalone mods.

I think it's important for the author to be clear from the get go here. Will it be early access, or a permanent paid mod. If it isn't made clear, there is technically no garantuee. But for the sake of the author, be as informative as possible. And for the sake of the buyer, make sure to have as much reassurance as possible before buying. If it's too fuzzy, ask the author to clear it up before hand or maybe don't trust that author. Or give it a shot anyway. There should ideally be a fair price, something you can afford to lose even if it's at the expense of trusting the mod author.

its good that it has evolved into a paid mods discussion thread, if not here, it would simply boil over into acutal mod threads, which would cause clutter and unneeded harassment

Yeah, that's actually true regardless of your stance on the subject. Because this discussion have been going on over in Lucas threads for too long. This is a better place to have the discussions.

The more the people say "free mod is a privilege" the less free mods will be available and the more overpriced paid meshslap(like 98% of flight sim mods) mods will be.

That's just a slippery slope fallacy.

I can guarantee you that there are plenty of people who think people should be allowed to charge for their mods, but who would never charge for their mods themselves due to the caveats that charging for things comes with (like an expectation of quality and support, and having to deal with drama)

Meshslapper charging for their trash is a thing that has been around for quite a while, usually in the form of private paid mods for youtubers. I can guarantee you that those types of paid mods will get them massive hate from everyone if they try to post them here, including by those defending Lucas charging for his mods. Posting a mod that is comprised of a ripped mesh slapped onto a barely modified vanilla jbeam is already a great way to generate some drama, so it's pretty easy to see how bad it would get if they said they're charging for it.

I never said that free mods is a human right, did I? However, the word "privilege" is a bit excessive.
Use "encryption" AKA "digital handcuffs" on non-official contents will create even more drama.
Good luck trying to pursue these restrictive "measures" on user created, non-official mods while the official content doesn't have.
