There's quite a bit of variety there. Nope, not just japanese cars.

Looks perfectly fine to me. Clean design with no unnecessary lines, not a very exciting car but it's not bad at all. Much better than most modern hatchbacks IMO.

I'm guessing you don't know about project CARS which is a spiritual sequel to shift. It's being made by the same studio just without EA's meddling.
