Re: General discussion chat Some quick facts: Microsoft is a bunch of greedy californians Microsoft had a pretty nasty past of greed, fails, false accusions and other various bad things. Microsoft is luckily starting to lose profit, and according to many trustworthy statistic sources it is going to go bankrupt in several year, not to mention that even today, more and more people is switching from Microsoft to other available options, does not matter form what to what, but it is happening big. The fact that windows is still the most common OS in the world is not going to stop it, even the AAA gaming industry is starting to support arternative systems, take a look at Valve, Dice... and many others. Microsoft at the other hand is trying as hard as it can to keep itself on the #1 place, to throw the others down, only to keep its profits. People don't like that, and so they are starting to abandon microsoft and are doing the smart move of switching platforms, Linux or Mac, it does not matter. Microsoft sucks. Get free.
Re: General discussion chat Really hope that boop didn't cause too much damage to the Bug, holy wow. Imagine how tightly the driver clenched his anus as the Prius flew just inches from his bonnet.
Re: General discussion chat Dunno how crossroads work in the US (the UK they are almost exclusively light controlled), but I'd assume that actually its not the priuses fault at all. We give way to the right at roundabouts etc, I'd assume it would be the exact same at a crossroad. Then account for left hand vs right hand drive that becomes give way to the left. The prius has right of way over the voyager.
Re: General discussion chat Nope, minivan had right of way, thats a 2 way stop sign intersection, people on the through road (the one the minivan is on) always have right of way Sent from the 3rd galaxy from the talks of tapping
Re: General discussion chat Open source software is great as a concept, but you can't replace Windows. Most professional software, including everything from Adobe and Autodesk, isn't available on Linux. The same happens with games. And if you think Apple isn't a bunch of greedy californians, oh boy are you wrong. They're far worse than Microsoft. And google isn't any good either, they're just as bad. As for plain performance, Windows 8.1 is much faster than Ubuntu as far as my experience goes (had both in dual-boot before I formatted my PC). The only reason to run Linux is if you really hate Microsoft for some reason. It seems it's now "cool" to use Linux because it's open source. I honestly don't give a shit about the company's policy, I just get whatever is better for me. inb4 linuxfag shitstorm
Re: General discussion chat I disagree with only reason to run linux being that you hate Microsoft. I don't hate microsoft but I fully support the idea of free and open computing which microsoft cannot provide, that said I don't like to limit myself to that and currently alot of the software I like to use is unavailable so both of my main machines are running windows 8.1 without dual boot. But my file server, linux. Parents old laptop I resurrected, linux, no point throwing windows on when linux is faster. Yes I did say linux was faster directly against your experience with ubuntu, but thats for 1 reason only, ubuntu sucks. As linux distros go, ubuntu is just a bloated piece of shite. If you want a beginners linux distro that is going to be somewhat bloated compared to what is possible but makes a good stomping ground for someone with windows experience with everything set up from the box, use Linux Mint. Mint's install size is about the same and its based on the Ubuntu core, but it ditches the fugly Unity desktop for Cinammon or Mate (depending on version, although KDE and XFCE variants are available too) and the standard out of the box software includes things like flash and java which a new-comer may not appreciate having to setup on ubuntu. I'm not a fan of either though. Next down ladder for me is Bodhi, fits on a single CD, again it is an ubuntu core but without any end user software, it is at least compatible with ubuntu though so can be configured for ubuntu software repositories and generally any guide on how to do x from bash on ubuntu will work on bodhi. I currently use Crunchbang as my distro of choice, again, minimalist, debian based rather than ubuntu based, got it running on parents old laptop at the moment, 150mb RAM usage and lightning quick on an old 1.8ghz centrino. Currently sitting at under 10gb hard disk usage with all 4 seasons of game of thrones on the hard disk. If there were a few more AAA games on linux and microsoft released Visual Studio (which they never will) I'd be over there in a heartbeat. Its slowly getting to the point where my daily driver may become linux based with windows VM's though. Microsoft Office for linux is also one I'd like to see but I can live with Libre-Office.
Re: General discussion chat while on the topic of linux distro's, any suggestions for one to dual boot along side my windows install? (that also supports GPT, and has a gui)
Re: General discussion chat I havent run any in a dualboot in quite some time (and when I did, I just let grub handle everything), Mint, Bodhi, CrunchBang or Debian depending on how involved you want to get. Or virtualbox them rather than dualboot them (I do with crunchbang on laptop)
Re: General discussion chat I use Crunchbang on my old Dell desktop. It runs so smooth. Pentium 4 and 1.5GB RAM is all it has.
Re: General discussion chat I'm about to change CPU and motherboard, I'm getting an i5-4690K but I'm not sure which mobo to get. I've basically narrowed down to these: Asus Z87 Pro Asus Z97-A Asus Z97 Sabertooth Mark 2 On the Z97 boards I can use the 4690K directly without BIOS updates. The Sabertooth is also more reliable and will last longer because of the TUF components, which is important as I probably won't be upgrading for quite a long time. The Z97-A has some extra stuff (TPU, EPU) but it uses standard ASUS components, still great quality though. On the other hand the Z87 Pro has some nice extra features (most of which I don't need anyway ), but I'll have to update the BIOS before I can use my PC. Which one is better?
Re: General discussion chat That is something I didnt know, will keep that in mind considering I am looking at getting a 4690K. Someone is selling me a bitfenix prodigy for whatever it costs him to ship his new case
Re: General discussion chat huh, for some reason my pc doesn't see the linux live USB(Linux Mint) i just setup as a valid boot drive (doesn't matter if im in legacy mode or not) strange
Re: General discussion chat I was thinking of getting a Z87-A and 4670K, but I have a bit more money to spend now so I can buy the Z87 Pro which has no-CPU BIOS updates. I'll either get that or the Sabertooth for extra reliability, there's no point in getting a Z97-A other than me being too lazy to update the BIOS before using my PC.
Re: General discussion chat Replies in blue I had the pleasure to watch some argues, or discussions, depends on how you call it, wit admeister on the RoR forums and i am sure that he will stomp me with other facts. He's real good.
