There was a change done to this that affects even older vehicles like the Hopper. Now the transfercase and range toggle keys do the same thing, which is to cycle through H2, H4 and L2. Cycling into low range just to switch between 2WD and 4WD is highly undesirable since you're forced into what are technically lower gears. It was better when the wheel drive and range were controlled separately.

How about devs make an update so ALT+A cycles forward and ALT+S cycles backwards

It would be hard to remember what backward and forward means in this case. The old system was better and probably better matched real-life functionality anyway.

Yes, I hate that change, it's so annoying having to cycle through low range every time. Devs, please change it back to the old transfer case operation.

Hey, the current behavior was implemented because it matches the real life hardware much closer than before. In fact, before it was a common complaint that things were unrealistic. I understand your concern about changing things while driving, but please understand that this is technically not something you should be doing anyway in most vehicles. Currently there is no penalty for doing so (like damaging the transfercase), but chances are that might come in some future update.
We could technically offer another input action for toggling the opposite direction, but I don't think that really helps you here.

Don't transfer case and range selection have separate levers or buttons in vehicles that have them?

I know what you're saying about having to stop first to change the mode, and I wouldn't mind if the game required it, but that's a separate issue.

In the Ibishu Hopper, then 2WD/4WD and Hi/Lo range are controlled by one lever, and the transfercase can only be switched in 2H/4H/4L
In the Autobello Stambecco, however, the 4WD/6WD and Hi/Lo range are controlled by their respective levers, thus the ALT+A and ALT+S can both be used, and it's (realistically) possible to switch to 6WDH or 4WDL

Almost every vehicle i have ever seen and every vehicle i have driven has 1 shift lever for 4wd and 4low

Agreed; most part-time 4x4 systems will have a linear transfer case selection for 2H > 4H > 4L (and sometimes a neutral) and separate controls for H/L range and 4x4 are not common. Unless I'm misunderstanding OP, I think the main concern is having to cycle through 4L to get back into high range. Many part-time 4x4 systems allow shifting at speed on-the-fly between 2H to 4H but the transfer case wouldn't require you to shift to 4L to get back to 2H... While a separate keykind for reverse toggling would be one way to handle it, I think a keybind for toggling between HIGH modes and a keybind for toggling into LOW range may be more intuitive. If we're really talking realism then most of them would require stopping and shifting into neutral before shifting between ranges to avoid drivetrain damage...

How about adding a Trasfercase damaged % when shifting between ranges at speed, like gearbox damage % when changing gear without using the clutch pedal

please no. don't encourage them to worsen the transfer case controls

"Worsen"??? You really want arcade style transfercase logic to remain in a simulator?

Instead of damage, another way to handle that would be to disable switching ranges while the vehicle is in motion. At least modern vehicles with electronics should behave like that.

But most 4x4 vehicles in the game are not modern so they probably wouldn't have that

Yeah, it should be done case by case, depending on age.

Well correct modern transfer case controls let you shift on-demand between 2wd high and 4wd high. You must shift into neutral first for low range. So, the devs making you also now shift through low range also while in gear is just moronic. It should be only able to shift from 2wd high to 4wd high and vice versa while in gear. Here's the compromise, you must be in neautral to be able to shift into a 4wd low. yea that's real-life t-case controls.
