In 2001 Chip Ganassi bought an 80% stake in Felix Sabates' Sabco Racing forming Chip Ganassi Racing. Ganassi kept veteran driver Sterling Marlin but was looking to add another driver to field a second car that was open due to the tragic death of Kenny Irwin the year prior. Ganassi tapped young rookie Jason Leffler to drive the newly rechristened 01 machine.
