Your completely right, that's the only sentence I read. I didn't even bother skimming the thing. Quite frankly, I couldn't care any less as to what you may say. My opinion is my opinion and no one's changing it, especially not some guy on an internet forum. - - - Updated - - - Fine by me. Yes, my lawn mower uses a flat engine, what's your point? I swear, if you don't see the joke in that... To be later beaten by the Ferrari F40, which used a conventional 2.9L Twin-Turbocharged V8. I don't care what Bill Gates owns, I can't stand the guy. Fine, I'll grant you that one. Flat 6, not an H6, next. That car wasn't even stock, it used the engine from a DTM tuned Impreza, because the stock one was apparently not good enough. I don't like Ferrari's, except for the 3, maybe even 4 exceptions posted in the Prettiest Cars thread. 5th isn't even a podium finish, next. Boxer vs. Flat design again, next. V-Twins are generally nicer overall. More torque. My Honda Shadow is no slouch. And let's not forget one of the most iconic superbikes of the late 70s, early 80s, the Honda CBX 1000, which used an I6 engine. The world would be a nicer place without them. I wouldn't miss the Beetle, it was concepted by a Nazi, and wasted Ferdinand Porsche's time while simultaneously being impossibly slow and completely ugly. I wouldn't miss Seat (Skoda's are ok in my book). Audi would be much better on their own, much less boring-German-car. The Gallardo, as much as I like it and as good as it may be, ruined my love for Lamborghini because it wasn't a real Lamborghini. That's a shame. Yes, fine, I do want one. There's a Type 2 truck down the street from me, and I want it. Again, CBX 1000. But... But... FWD. I wouldn't miss it. Yes, I may be a dipstick, but I don't care.
To say a boxer is crap based on torque or power is stupid. Whether the cylinders are arranged inline, in a V with angles varying from 1 to 180 degrees, multiple banks or true boxer makes ZERO difference to either torque or power. Torque and as a result overall horsepower is defined from several things. Bore Stroke Rod length Compression ratio Port sizes Valve timings Cylinder head design And many more factors too. What layout the pistons are in doesn't impact the torque. It only effects the packaging, mechanical complexity (flat be it a 180-V or a true boxer is no more mechanically complex than V) and the balance. Take an inline 3 cylinder engine (awful setup), as the pistons move up and down, they cause the entire engine block to rock back and forth. Happens in a V with a left/right oscillation. Does not happen in a boxer as the 2 opposed pistons cancel one another's forces. V6s are often made with the cylinder banks at a 90 degree angle, causes firing timings to be slightly out and as a result deliver power unevenly. V8s with a cross plane crankshaft and boxers do not have this problem (racing flatplane crankshaft v8s are not flatplane to produce more power but because the crankshaft can be built tougher to stand up to more power). Actually, better example, V twin vs boxer twin. In a V twin you get a power stroke, then 90 degrees later a power stroke, then a full 180+360 degrees with no power stroke. Boxer its 360 degrees between power strokes. Much smoother running (V twins are rough as fuck). Hard to explain that properly without diagrams I don't have on mobile. But, take the overall cylinder design and rod length from a V8, stick it in a boxer 8, you lose no horsepower. Oh. No Hitler hiring Ferdinand Porsche, Ferdinand wouldn't have had the money to carry on working anyway.
Anyone with a fixed opinion, in general or even more so like this case where they have limited knowledge on the topic in question, is simply close minded and ignorant. An opinion is not always based on face however its not a way to ignore facts and more importantly its not a fixed state of mind. For example if someone said "Bill Gates has never done anything for anyone" and I were to say "He has donated millions to charity", that should change their opinion on it. Whether its from a person on an internet forum is irrelevant, the point still stands. The VW beetle has adequate power for a car designed in the 1930's and for the weight and size of it. 6677 has a pretty good point over all, Porsche and VW wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the VW Beetle.
Please explain to me how the world would be a nicer place without the car that kickstarted the trend of affordable family cars? Just because you don't like them for no reason doesn't mean they shouldn't exist. Also, Nazism? Why does that even matter? It's 2014, not 1939. I guess you should also ignore Hugo Boss items, hypothermia treatment, magnetic storage tape, jet-engined aeroplanes, and even your computer if you care so much about Nazis inventing them?
Lmao this fucking community. Godwin's Law strikes again! Anyway. 1971 Fiat ESV: Experimental Safety Vehicle. Involved lots of impact-absorbing rubber. (imported from here)
It's not so much whether you care or not about a certain car, it's whether or not "something important has ever happened with a boxer engine", which was the original statement. And when a car is the most influental car in the world, I'd say that's a pretty important thing. And yes, the New Beetle is fugly(though the latest one is a bit better). Probably because its a FF layout...
To me, the old one is an icon. It isn't a looker, but for the time it was highly advanced and as a result its the iconic ugly bug and exempt from ugly car threads. The new ones shit all over it though. The new beetle (as it was introduced as not the very current model) is just a golf with a very vaguely beetle inspired remodel although I guess it does fit Hitlers original sketch (I have it in a book somewhere, very very crude sketch). Its just wrong, ugly, expensive for what it is and wrong. The current one is more faithful cosmetically but its still an uglier and more expensive version of the golf. Dear VW, for the 4th beetle, RR please. At first, the Nazi party did a lot of good for reforming Germany, fixed a comoletely broken economy at the very least. Although we all know what happens next so I'll stop there before tdev filters it out again. Sadly the facist party in Britain have way too much support (Britain First).
Why are we all talking about nazis? What car was called Hitler to spark this off? and I'm far too amused by the fact that no-one's noticed there's porsche badges on two of the beetles in that image I posted. I need no more evidence that the 9/11 is also fugly
The beetle project was started by Hitler. Plain and simple. He wanted a car that could be manufactured in Germany (hence creating jobs for the German people) which would be capable of transporting a family and their luggage easily while being affordable by the working class and easy to maintain.
He quite literally wanted a car that could transport 2 adults and 3 childern in speeds above 100km/h, and cost 990 reich marks (average weekly wage then was 32 reich marks), and that (990) was the cost of a small motorcycle back then. So he wanted a car that people could buy instead of a moto! Also: Lets not forget that the Beetle (Porsche and Hitler himself actually) were strongly influenced by the czechoslovakian Tatra. Tatra later actually sued VW for using their design of the air cooled fourbanger and other stuff they patented, BUT then in 38' Hitler came and so Tatra and whole of czechoslovakia was suddenly in nazi hands so now lawsuit bro. They even discontinued all the possible brothers and sisters of the Beetle and were forced to do military equipment and diesel engines (They did only keep the T87 in production tho, because Hitler liked them himself)
I like porsches, they look fairly nice. While there are similarities between it and a beetle the proportions are sized much nicer.
I like Porsche. Except for the Panamera, it's ugly. At least not as ugly as the 5 series GT. Seriously, the only proper 4-door coupe is the Audi A7. That thing is awesome.
In person the panamera looks fine in my opinion. Maserati also make a nice one, can you also put tesla in the same class cause they make some really nice cars?
