Well to be honest I didn't test it as I don't have a controller myself but according to the comments in the existing code it shouldn't affect gamepads. Maybe I just stumbled upon some outdated information there.

Can you also do this for the exparimental build?

Did a test run of this. Holy crap, this kind of thing should be in the game by default. At least as an option.
This really does make the game 100% playable with a keyboard. The Bolide 390GTR is a breeze to control on the basic arrow keys.
Also, I did my test on the experimental build. Works perfectly fine.

I'm glad this is still helping so many of you!

I'm pretty sure the devs have discovered this already and I can think of two reasons why this isn't a default feature yet. First I believe that the interest in supporting keyboard users isn't very large since this is an enthusiasts game and most players are expected to have a gamepad at least. On the other hand what I did is a pretty simple implementation so I suppose they rather want to work on a more complex system which will obviously take longer.

Installed yesterday and it helps immensely, thank you so much. I can actually drive the top speed version of the gavril (300mph+) and keep some sort of control.

Much better steering. Would definitely recommend. +1

I found this to be a great help controlling the vehicles, and am considering adapting it to the xbox controller, since although the controller has analog steering, its still way too sensitive for high speed driving with the current tire model.

ok I don't know what happened but when I put the input.lua file in the folder it said it already existed and this was before I pasted the mod ... now my game is completely broken..... I don't know how to fix it.... when that message popped up a replaced the existing input.lua file with the mod... and now my car wont move...

You didnt follow directions. You were supposed to rename the old input, and then put the new input.lua file into the folder. Remove or rename the old input, and now your game should be fixed and easier to play with a keyboard

    'Afternoon.

Sorry to necromance an old thread, but when I stumbled across this after a Google search I felt really pleased, as I'm a casual player who doesn't want to sit at the desktop with a console pad or wheel or anything and I'm really only in this game because the deformation physics are astounding and I do like making crash-related movies (you can see an example of my GTA4 antics here)...).

However, I'm not sure whether it's the fact that this fix was posted almost a year ago and my Steam version is now presumably 0.3.8.3, but when I follow the instructions to the letter (and I'm familiar with this type of file-setting mod having butchered my files for GTA4 as you might have guessed from that video), I load the game and the car won't move.

In fact, the speedometre is red, and when I go into "Controls" it says "Controller 4 Disconnected"! However, it still recognises the keyboard as an input device...but I don't know how to tell it to use the keyboard instead of whatever it thinks controller 4 is!

This also happens when I install the mod in this thread.

In both cases I can revert the game back to how it was before by deleting the new files and re-renaming the old files, so no harm done. Just frustrating!

I'm just seeking an easy way I can enjoy playing the game with keyboard controls in the way that a luddite like me is more used to - I appreciate it's a hardcore "for the enthusiasts" style sim but it would be a shame if I could never really enjoy this physics sim just because it was impossible to even control the basic FWD hatchbacks!

Even with everything on "low" it still looks very pretty indeed - even when the car is mangled around a couple of trees I sit back in my chair and go "Awww". :)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Tom

Yeah, same problem. I wish I had this mod before the steam release. But now the new steering is so unbearably slow. :(

Yes, that's the real issue - it makes controlling even the slowest cars virtually impossible.

It's a shame as the game is very pretty otherwise and the new user interface is very smart indeed.

unsure what was meant by the second step of the installation process.
Any chance someone can please explain it to me in a little more detail xD.
    Thanks

In the 'lua' folder there is a file called 'input.lua'. Backup it or change it's name to something else.
Then put the 'input.lua' file from the zip in there.

Also, this mod is very old. It's probable it will break things if you use it. Use it at your own risk :)

Hello guys and sorry for bumping an old thread.

@Mr. Hankey: Thank you very much for this code.
Yesterday I stumbled over this thread in desperate search for a way to make steering speed sensitive and found the input.lua attached in OP as a possible solution. Unfortunately it isn't compatible with the recent version of the game.
I did some editing and finally managed to integrate the features in your script into the current input.lua.

Am I allowed to upload this updated file here?
