50mpg is crap for a hybrid. The prius is a hybrid. A horridly environmentally damaging to manufacture hybrid.
The 50 mpg figure is just an average, most owners get around 60 mpg. And in the United States, 50 mpg it isn't too bad, considering we don't get many diesel models here. I would definitely take a VW Golf Bluemotion over a Prius. However, I do agree with you on environmental damage caused by the manufacturing.
unless you're in 'Murica, in which case 50MPG is actually quite high, and average MPG for most cars is in the 20's and 30's and a few 40's
