That's actually not true, either. The gentleman's agreement was to prevent a horsepower war between the domestic manufacturers. US-spec versions of the same cars were more powerful. One example being the MK4 Toyota Supra. In Japan, on paper, it was 276 horsepower for the twin-turbo model. In the US and Europe it was more powerful, thanks to smaller turbos and larger fuel injectors. In the US, it was rated at 321 horsepower, 326 in Europe.
