Presenting... the "Land Of The Death Roads" 4096x4096m, completely impossible roads and AI traffic that yeets down the cliffs every 5 seconds... coming soon™ I've been working on my first map mod for a couple of days now and I think it is slowly coming together so I thought I'd create a post on it to gather some feedback on how it looks and what you would like to see featured in the map. However, since I know almost nothing about more advanced modding stuffs in BeamNG and more specifically the world editor, I might not be able to implement all suggestions. The map features mostly unpaved and extremely narrow death roads, I tested all of them with Automation exported buses. Some of them are possible with regular 12m city buses like the Mercedes Citaro or Solaris Urbino, some will be much more difficult and require you to use >10m midibuses and some are only possible with the smallest of microbuses such as the Tecnobus Gulliver which you can see in the screenshots for scale. There is also larger main roads (though they are still really narrow) and some more small paved roads that connect the unpaved trails so you can choose what level of insanity you want to bestow upon yourself. Overall, the roads are designed to be almost, but not actually impossible to drive. There was some issues with the world editor while making this map, such as the heightmap importer completely breaking when having to import a regular 4096x4096 grayscale png heightmap, so I resorted to a more unconventional method of first converting the heightmap to a 3D model and then aligning the terrain with it in the world editor. Not the most elegant solution as the very edges of the map are a bit janky, but it does work after all and I'm going to stick to what I have until there is a better solution. This map was created using the map template creator tool made by Grille. Here are some screenshots of the map in its current state: My trusty Tecnobus Gulliver on one of of the medium width death roads. Beautiful vistas along the way, made even better by CK's skybox mod. Some areas of the road are not just unpaved, but severely damaged... The main road is wide enough to comfortably fit two vehicles side by side, however the AI traffic will still crash (somehow)... One of the smaller paved roads. Still fits 2 vehicles at once, but you'll have to be much more careful and the AI will crash even more. Just when you think the roads can't possibly get any worse... A small gameplay demo can be found here.
Loosely, yes. I'm happy that this immediately reminds you of that road since I watched a bunch of videos and street view coverage to try and replicate the feel and "quality" of the road
This is an unreleased old port from a mobile game called Public Transport Simulator, the Tecnobus Gulliver is a small electric microbus from Italy which was featured in that game, and I liked it a lot when I was playing it, so I decided to port it to Automation and export it to BeamNG from there. I ported 3 buses in total from PTS to Automation to BeamNG, might upload them too at some point
Woah...death roads is right! I think I might feel too frustrated to take a bus or semi up there, but I'm seeing some serious rally possibilities... Keep it up!
Some progress on the map has been made in the last few days, mostly some more regular tarmac roads were added to connect the death roads and I'm currently working on adding some buildings to make the map feel a little less empty and dead. More narrow roads are in the works, I have some nice routes in mind that could make for a good driving experience with some nice views along the roads. I'm currently experiencing some minor issues with the world editor, namely excessive loading times (the asset browser takes a good 10-15 minutes to load for some reason even though my PC has all the modern parts in it, Ryzen 5 7600, RTX 4060Ti 16 GB, 64 GB DDR5 4800 MHz, WD Blue SN580 2TB SSD etc) so progress is not quite as fast as it potentially could be, although I'm happy with what I have so far since this is after all my first ever map and it's only been a week since I started working on it. Here is some screenshot of the new additions: A small village next to the lake with a Mercedes Citaro C2 for scale, WIP, will become much larger in the future The new road leading to the village makes for a nice view of the lake while driving Some roads around the village, the narrower road will connect the village to places located higher up in the mountains The main road received a makeover, now it has markings in the center and it's paved properly in most sections Another paved road, this one leads to a valley on the other side of the map and has some very steep slopes
This map looks great! Do you think you will create a BeamMP server for it? (I noticed simulation adventures saying that would be a fun thing to do in the comments of your demo video) as it would be a very fun new off-roading challenge to do with my friend online! I love a bit of off-roading, if you couldn’t tell!
I would definitely create a BeamMP server for this map if I could, but setting up a server locally didn't work, I don't have any payment methods to rent a server and BeamMP itself doesn't really work for me either as I seem to be unable to join any existing servers. If anyone wants to make a server for this map though, you are more than welcome. I'm currently looking into creating a bus pack containing a couple of buses including the Citaro, just need to figure out how to include multiple vehicles in one mod
in the vehicle folder: you can add more vehicles by adding a new folder and just making it behave like a normal vehicle
did figure it out, am now uploading my 3 ported buses to the repo can be found here if it gets accepted https://www.beamng.com/resources/meehdreschers-3-bus-pack-vol-1.33793/
