a monthly subscription, for more than a lot of full paid car mods cost, just to get parts for one car is wild
Hate it or love it. You didn't put the time and effort into making it. point blank period. If you hate it be the change you wanna see. You go invest the time, the money, the energy to create something and release it for free. I'm not forcing you to buy it. I haven't forced the 100 to 200 people that have supported my project and vision to buy it. Where's the issue? It isn't here. So please be mature and realize artist have the right to value their hard work. Just as you have a right to think the price is to high and to not buy it.
Hey man sorry if a came off as rude or annoying I just think it's dumb that BeamNG used to be all about the community and spreading free mods for everyone to use and enjoy. But now it's all about money. But no, it's fine, make all the paid mods u want just expect less people to enjoy it.
It's totally fine by me you're entitled to your own opinion. Imho most decent creators make both free and paid content not just paid. we ourselves have just as many free as we do paid. I'm not trying to stomp down anyone's experience from enjoying the parts.
I'll pay once for a mod, provided that guarantees at least a couple updates of support. Platforms like Ko-Fi are fine. IMO the devs should be outlawing Patreon by the TOS. Its ridiculous we let modders use the subscription model that relies on people forgetting they are subscribed to generate you income forever. Its an inherently abusive and unethical model. Rent seeking behavior should never be encouraged, its by far the worst form of capitalism. And all these clown paid subscription modders are shocked when their shit gets leaked and everyone is just stealing it instead. You can have a reasonable amount of my money once, or you can have none of my money. People are too greedy to be logical and choose the former option.
What makes you think your mods are worth over the course of a couple of months more than the cost of the entire game? Its just a racket for lazy people that don't want to work and don't have the chops to get an actual game dev job.
Maybe I just value my time more than others, I don't have to convince you to subscribe since it's clear that you've already made up your mind. Thankfully there are people here who happily support me in my modding endeavours and i'm very grateful of their support. This is per definition false since I do actually do work more than full time.
I don't mind paying someone to do the impossible for me. It's not hard to pay someone to do something I can't do...
You know I just looked at your Patreon, and actually I do remember you now. I thought DennisW seemed familiar. I was active on the RoR forums over a decade ago now, before BeamNG was even a thing (Remember how the forums for the longest time would automatically change any mention of BeamNG to read RoR instead?). This makes it worse. You know how modding used to be about community, about having fun. Not about profit. At least these modern paid modders are just ignorant, your straight up a traitor to the modding community for going straight into the deep of paid modding to subscription mods. Your right, I have made up my mind. I won't pay for a subscription. For almost anything, much less a *video game mod*. I begrudgingly have accepted one time payments for mods, as some of them genuinely are high quality, but the more important thing is the amount of money changing hands and what I am receiving in return is pre-defined and mutually agreed upon. Subscriptions are inherently designed to defraud people. You know to some degree I don't blame you, if people are stupid enough to pay $5 a month ($60 a year) for access to what seems to be a single prerunner mod (I guess thats atleast more of a legit mod than alot of the mesh-slaps out there on Patreon) and some tire packs, I guess that's their fault. But that doesn't change that your relying on an inherently deceptive business model and engaging in a practice that harms the community by doing so. EDIT: Shit I've been active on *these* forums for over a decade now.
""""But that doesn't change that your relying on an inherently deceptive business model and engaging in a practice that harms the community by doing so."""" WOW WOW WOW How many years you've been on this forum doesn't matter. It doesn't give you the right to criticize other players and modders for their choices.
First off, yes it does. Because it means I put my money where my mouth was for the success of this game and the community before other people. Second, I can politely criticize modders and other players to my hearts content unless a moderator of this forum tells me otherwise, and even then they had best have an explanation for what forum rule I am breaking.
You’re right, but this was before people started stealing my art for their own financial gain. Times have changed, modding is a lot more sophisticated too now, and at a whopping average of $2 an hour I dont think it’ll replace my day job anytime soon. I don’t do it for the money, but at least now i am the main beneficiary of my own work, and the money gets put towards the tools and costs required to make more. (i feel we are hijacking the thread a little bit, dm’s are open)
Quick reminder that this guy changed his review to negative on the game simply because they started selling the game on the Epic Games Store. Personally I would take his opinion with a mountain of salt.
Im not going to quote multiple things you've said here but, I will say my two cents and leave it at that. Firstly, The reason I personally use patreon isn't for the subscription pay model but, rather the immense amount of features that help me as a user. Those features range from the ease of use community interactions and statistical data provide about your community. I.e. engagement tracking and the ability to be able to directly interact with my community on patreon rather that be for refunding people, viewing their memberships verifying that they aren't just someone who stole my digital assets, and more importantly having a clear and established method to reach them to inform them on updates, state of mods and etc. I also find the way patreon handles tax returns to be extremely beneficial and limiting the amount of time I must invest in keeping track of the money exchanging hands. Tldr its extremely user friendly and helps me not get hunted by the big scary IRS tax man. Secondly, I dont do this for profit. I work full time 70 hours a week 6 days a week traveling. My patreon in its current standing makes about 8.1 dollars a day. Certainly not a liveable wage in America. I manage to create on the side very sparsely and I try my best to ensure its up to standard. Im not here to convince anyone they need or should subscribe to my patreon. That being said I personally am extremely grateful for those that do chose to support me and my work. Im simply offering something I've made in exchange for what I value the effort of making said thing. The only reason I even use patreon is to offset the cost of some of the programs I use to model and texture my work. I've been in the beamng community since late 2016. Mods where definitely free in the beginning but the standard for what a good mod is between 2016 and currently in 2025 have vastly changed. The amount of research, skills sets, and energy to make something be dev quality which is the standard now a days has drastically increased. Thus people wanting some form of payment for said effort is hand and hand. People are pouring months to years into a single project. These things dont just make themselves over night. Third, You make baseless claims with no real validity. One example being "Its just a racket for lazy people that don't want to work and don't have the chops to get an actual game dev job". You assume the worst with out ever really verifying the facts behind such a claim. Its extremely foolish behavior. Also resorting to name calling as seen here "And all these clown paid subscription modders are shocked when their shit gets leaked" its extremely childish. Regardless of manners or "putting your money where your mouth is" you come off as extremely immature. Finally, I will restate what was said above. Be the change you want to see. Realistically you may have qualms with how I operate but, im not going to change it. Nothing you say, think, or do will ever change the factor that I value my time, skills, and energy. If you want free mods go invest your own time, skills, energy, and money into them.
He also had plans to create a program that would collect other people's mods and sell them for money. I don't understand why he's expressing such an opinion about paid mods now.
Because he's an asshole. He takes whatever opinion will stir the most controversy. Like this post, for example: And his response isn't better. He also calls the people who agreed to the BeamNG EULA stupid, as seen in this post. In other words: This guy is a clown. Don't listen to anything that he has to say. It's all bullshit. --- Post updated --- Man, it gets worse.
