I guess I can see where you're coming from. It's a simplistic design.
The black bumpers and steelies do complement the look, though.

Too bad it's getting its bronze/gold color sport wheels installed soon. ;)

Keep the steelies on. It looks better.
Nice rims on a car like that just looks stupid. Mechanical needs should ALWAYS come before aesthetic needs. It's got 600,000 miles for god sakes.
Speaking of miles, do you know how many engines and transmissions it's been through?

Not really the best looking car but still one most people have never heard of.

    Ford Contour SVT 3110lbs. 200hp. 0-60 7.6 seconds.
(Mondeo for you across the pond)

We never had a Mondeo SVT of that generation, but the next generation gave us the Mondeo ST220.

    (imported from here)

    3.0L V6, 221hp, 0-60 in 7.4 seconds.

I cam so close to buying one of those. It was silver with a 5 speed. Miles were a little high, but that wasn't what stopped me from getting it.

Stupid insurance. It stopped me from the Contour SVT and the Bonneville SSE Supercharged.

I'm a fan of the bumpers and the steelies. I'm also a fan of pizza-cutter tires- don't ask me why.

Black bumpers and steelies can look good on certain cars. I can also understand the pizza-cutter tires thing.

Another car lost to history... 1985 Ford EXP Turbo
    Think Mustang Junior.
The looks of the first gen probably didn't help. Turbo 1.6L I4. 0-60 in about 8.8. Definitely on par with the times.
    Think Mustang Junior.
26/46 mpg (31/50mpg UK) with the turbo.

    Second gen looks good though...

I got several cars i can think of:

    1. Volskwagen Kombi (Transporter/type 2 bus/camper van) T2 (or T1) (But this is the Kombi last edition which is the last of the T2 production line in brazil in 2013) im not sure these varriants are underrated themselves but no one seems to like them anymore as they used to from my point of view.

    2. A Fiat 900 T (or E variant of the camper or regular van or panel van or pretty much any variant of the fiat 900 series)

    3. and finally even though its a french car i still happen to like the renault r17 gordini

The '69 Charger R/T. It will be underrated until everyone owns one.

    Really though, Saab wagons.

These are actually pretty fun to drive when full loaded. Good brakes and weight distribution.

If you read Hot Rod and Car & Driver a lot, it's easy to become jaded toward older supercars. You start saying things like "only" 450 horsepower and "only" 185 MPH. In actual use, I suspect, that's still quite a lot.

But everywhere you go is charger this, charger that. Underrated? No. Over hyped.
