Not sure if this is the right place for this since it's not a mod itself but I built a free tool that converts vehicles between left-hand drive and right-hand drive - vanilla cars or mods, in either direction. It's not a mod pack, its a standalone conversion tool. You point it at a vehicle zip, pick the trims/variants you want to convert (yes you can convert in batches), tell it which parts to translate (steering wheel, pedals, gauges) and which to mirror (dash, centre console, wing mirrors), and it builds a converted mod zip and drops it straight into your mods folder. The tool uses a combination of swapping, mirroring and translating visual meshes, it doesn't touch the vehicle physics to keep the conversions stable. Interior cameras get converted too, so first person is just right. Stock LHD and Converted RHD Sunburst: The whole workflow revolves around a live 3D preview. Parts are colour coded by what's happening to them (blue = translated, orange and pink = mirrored), you can click a part in the viewport to select it, hide things out of the way, and turn the whole car see-through to check the interior without pulling doors off. Every setting change shows up in the preview instantly - no waiting for a rebuild. It's a Windows exe, nothing to install - download, extract, run. The source code is on GitHub released under an MIT license. It ships with two example configs so you can see what a full conversion looks like: every Sunburst trim converted LHD to RHD (all 39 of them) and every 200BX trim converted RHD to LHD or LHD to RHD (36). Source and full README: https://github.com/Telestang/BeamHDC Being upfront about the limitations: mod quality varies wildly, if your starting vehicle isn't symmetric in the ways it should be it will take some manual tweaking but the knobs are there to dial in an acceptable result. While the tool does correctly convert the vehicles first person camera, there is a game engine bug that affects official RHD cars like the 200BX too. If you look over your shoulder in first person in an RHD car you will notice the "driver's" head barely pokes out the window. I've reported it here along with a fix: 0.38 Discussion Thread | Page 19 | BeamNG The tool is new and it's been working well for me, but there will be things I haven't hit yet. If a conversion comes out wrong, open a GitHub issue with the vehicle zip name and your conversion json. That's genuinely all I need to reproduce it exactly on my end.
While I was waiting for this post to get approved by the mods I posted about this over on the reddit sub and it's got good feedback so far: https://www.reddit.com/r/BeamNG/s/xwVsGPwWAF
Glad to hear it worked! If you use it a bit more and notice anything awkward or unintuitive with the workflow, I'd appreciate hearing about it. I've had a few confirmations that the conversions work so far, but not much actual feedback on using the tool itself yet
It might be that the exe was built using PyInstaller, which has a habit of triggering AV false positives. If you Google Pyinstaller AV false positives you'll find a disclaimer about this kind of thing on their documentation. I would put a direct link in my reply but since my account is new you'd have to wait for a mod to approve my response which could be like a full day. I enabled compression when building the exe, which might be contributing. When I get chance I'll rebuild it with that turned off and rescan it, since the tool is fairly lightweight anyway. The full source and build files are also public on the GitHub repo if anyone wants to inspect or run it directly. --- Post updated --- I drive an old vauxhall astra IRL and I couldn't find a mod for one but there's a half decent one for an LHD Opel astra. I figured getting RHD version out of it would be as simple as mirroring the dash and moving the steering wheel and pedals over, so why not put that into a tool
So far, there haven't been any issues. As a player who enjoys driving on Japanese and UK maps, this is of great help to me, as many modders do not provide RHD options for their mods
I did look into this and what I tried didn't stop it getting flagged. Obviously the publisher of the questionable exe is the last guy you should trust but I suggest you look up the AVs that detected the malware: bkav pro and SecureAge and also look up VirusTotal false positives in general.
Found an interesting bug: bucket seat wings. I think it only affected the "mirror structural" transformations, which meant one of the several transforms which goes into the conversion was being skipped. I've patched that and it appears to have fixed the issue. If you downloaded the older version I recommend updating the app, load any base vehicles you've converted and clicking "Build + Install" (the app will remember the original config you used per vehicle).
This is great, I've been waiting for something like this for a long time. Edit: successfully converted my IRL car to RHD using this tool! I had previously tried to do it manually in blender but I couldn't get it to work.
Glad it went smoothly, the tool is a work in progress so if you ever need it again check the GitHub for updates. I'm currently looking into customising license plates and car paint colour from within the app by altering the config of the converted vehicles. I want to stick UK plates on some of my conversions but I'll be looking at other options too.
Big update, the tool now lets you customise the plates (different front and rears too) on both converted and stock vehicles. Since the tool is now doing more than hand drive conversions and now lets you customise different country plates, I've decided to rename the tool BeamXP. XP for eXPort since it can now produce factor exports - same vehicle made for different regional markets. The sunburst is my favourite example to use since the vanilla sunburst only comes in LHD despite the manufacturer of origin being Japan.
I used the tool to convert all 39 variants of the ETK 800-Series and put them on kofi for free: ETK 800 Series Right-Hand-Drive - Telestang's Ko-fi Shop I recorded the conversion for this one with a timer - completed and loaded in game in 4 minutes 30 seconds (less than 7 seconds per trim). See it in action and how it was done here: ETK800 Demo - YouTube You can get the BeamXP tool for free off GitHub too if you want to do your own conversions between LHD and RHD plus customise front and rear license plates: Telestang/BeamXP This mod was created with a new version of this tool than what is available on GitHub but I will be updating it soon.
