Here in Ohio under OMEA (Ohio Music Education Association) a band can qualify for state in a self hosted competition. I don't know about Mid-States or anything else though. I think we can technically qualify under exhibition as well, but don't quote me. I started the year we started competing.

Just got back from a week in Oregon with my university SAE Baja student team. I was the suspension designer and one of the more active fabricators last year. This year I came along to support the team and pass on some of my experience to new members. I decided to take a back seat and let the new guys drive, and they did not disappoint In the car's first competition last year, it was very durable and an excellent handling vehicle, but a loose bolt in the CVT and a slipping throttle cable caused us to fall behind into 30-something place in the 4 hour endurance race. This year, with some improvements to the drivetrain, we made 11th place in the 4hr endurance race, with no mechanical difficulties at all. Only 25 or so other cars managed to cross the finish line! Hopefully next year the team will make it into top ten with an evolution of my suspension design. To do that I think we will need to shave some 30-40lb out of the car and improve the CVT tuning.
