This map made it through the Steam transition although I lost some work because I didn't copy over required files out of the cache before I did the update. Nothing I can't re-do in a couple hours, 100% my fault. Devs are doing so much mod back ups it's insane and I'm very grateful.
did you check the backup folder made in the beamng documents, because my old cache was in there. edit: whoops got beaten to the post
Thanks guys....I did look in that and noticed the basetex was gone so I left it....real sketchy on doing the wrong thing here. I will double check that though. Okay I got it. I'm too tired to explain it but it's all good! Thanks for the motivation to dig deeper.
Haven't checked this thread for updates in the past few days... The new screenshots a few posts before were very pretty. Also glad to hear that the road resizing went smoothly and easily. Also one question about the roads: In the main post it says they are fast, smooth, and comfortable. What is the average speed on most of the roads? I also got another idea. This terrain looks really good for a smaller (1-2 lanes per side) highway, that would be somewhat twisty, but also longer stretches of straighter road. But, since you already have pretty much everything done, I am pretty much certain that you'll have no space for such a thing, and it'll mess up the scenery. And if you were wondering about the highway, I was thinking of something similar to crowsnest highway (highway 3) in the area between Hope and Manning Park. Here's a picture (not great but best I could find) :
The road layout is finalized however The idea of four lane "passing zones" occurred to me many times. At this point I am eager to get to a point where I feel a beta needs to happen. I have so many ideas rolling around my head it's almost distracting. As for your suggestion and pic, a 2048X2048 map could handle it but for me to be happy with a realistic representation of that I'd want a 4096. I want to do a map that big. The speed is as fast as you can drive. The "lawful" speed limits on these roads would probably be between 20-55mph being a two lane. That's why I made the road size so large.. too large...to be able to drive and drift through turns with no worries of hitting trees. The smaller road is a compromise (10), and will require a bit more skill to take. I need to mention the grass, it is dew filled and slick, blow it and you'll be picking Dougfir out of your nostrils. 100+ mph is easily possible on the straight sections however, the hills and blind turns should challenge any attempt to do so. Thanks for the suggestion!
Your welcome! The roads seem really nice and fast. Also, can Torque 3D even have 4096 maps? Isn't that desert highway map that size? I was working on a highway map just to get used to map making, ran into many problems and could hardly get any progress. I will try to make that again, and maybe release it if it's good enough. Otherwise, I also plan to make a map like the highway above, and if I ever get enough skill I'd like to make some of the Sea to Sky highway...
Yeah Desert Highway is 8K and the only one I know of, maybe Grooved Range too. Doing 8k maps on a quality level is out of my universe but it would be cool to try eventually. You should go for your map! I could help with what little I know. I was seriously contemplating doing a nice and easy prairie style map and releasing it for experience. Kinda' wish I had and I recommend it. A "sea to sky" map is an awesome idea.
Ok, thanks for correcting me. So 8K would be 8km x 8km by default? I forgot these things... (Also, here's a plan of what that map might look like.) : (grey part being the highway, green being large hills (people outside of this region would probably call them mountains. ) and other scenery as well, and the yellowish lines being flat emptiness that you shouldn't see from anywhere.) If the map really is 8km x 8km, then I'd aim for making a 10ishkm stretch of highway. As for my map for learning, I will (and tried previously) make part of Highway 1 based off the Chilliwack/Abbotsford/Langley part of the highway where I live. And as for help, I will probably need it to learn how to use the map editor properly. So thanks for offering! Anyway... Back on topic: You could release a "basically released beta". One that is good enough to be released but made for us to suggest changes. I assume that's what you meant by beta release anyway.
"Fuck it boss, damn Canuck done godamn dam well took out the whole turn over on the 20 again, when they gonna' stop sellin' that godamn Labbats up there?" "When you stop eatin' twinkies Royce" *Disclaimer* This post is referred to as "humor" and merely illustrates the unique and witty bond intelligent Canadians and Americans share. - - - Updated - - - Chugging along. Finally figured out mesh guardrail and got a test stretch to play with, yep too big. Thank you Doullpepper for the textures on that! I can't wait to learn how to texture things, man that's the meat and potatoes of everything. I have beautiful sign textures from Occams Razor and I'm friggin' lost on making those work as additional and independent signs. The learning train steams on. Putting in veggies by the lakes and they are more deciduous/leafy. Will work on little areas to park by the lakes with small structures of some sort. The final snow layout is soon and I'm debating on switching the textures up and possibly attempt the snow particle route. Also debating on whether to make the peaks driveable. If I do they will be tough to even see much less drive. Pickle330, PM me if I can help with your map.
So I had a hiccup with the latest build and had to revert to a saved map. Nothing critical but I have work to do. Never figured out what the issue with the vanishing trees was and to be honest didn't have the energy to. This is precisely why I keep updated map copies handy. New SSD arrives tomorrow so I can kill my 128GB with a kitchen knife.....or maybe a hammer. Part of my issue is a full drive and the constant swapping and deleting of shit. BeamNG takes WAY to long to load up on my HDD and I get terrible 2 second freezes while playing.
You got that hiccup (hiccough) too? I ate at Corney's today, full order chicken fajita style quesadilla, then went for my typical 3.5 jog, I am such an idiot. Still I recommend a hatchet vs misfit technology, it just chops right for me. Save your magnets, and still we oogle the Forest Hills.
The new screenshots in the first post are awesome! Really loving those signs... Especially the ones on turns. Are you still taking a break from this? Or just working at a relaxing pace? (no pressure, just wondering...)
Thank you sir, Occam's Razor did a fine job with those signs, ain't done with them yet either. After the update and tree freak out I've been taking a break. Still learning all this and from mistakes and from out of the blue awesome things as well. My goal of a beta release soon needs to happen.
Well I lost all my custom materials this map was founded on. Don't even ask. Making maps at this stage of the game is damn near suicide. Hopefully I can figure out what happened. Enjoy what screens there are.
Oh man, that's stupid. Hope you deal with this problem soon. If this gets released I think it will be my favourite map. Keep on, don't abandon it.
