Well, I've found the only pre-built I'd actually buy for myself (outside of a Mac Pro or iMac). It's an off-lease HP Z400 Workstation. Specs are as follows: Intel Xeon W3565 @ 3.2 GHz 8 GB ECC ram @ 1066 MHz 475W PSU Nvidia Quadro 1800 768MB 2.5 TB storage (2x 1TB, 1x 500GB) Windows 7 Professional $278 I want it bad.
That's a great deal. Nice CPU. The Quadro FX 1800 is not the most powerful card, but it will do fine in CAD work
I was actually contemplating throwing something in the lines of a GT740/R7 250 in it coupled with a gigabit Ethernet card (because HP refuses to put gigabit LAN on their computers for some reason) and an Avermedia capture card and use it as a livestreaming/video capture/backup PC. Thing is, I have the money for that Z400, a Mac Pro, or the 2 R9 390's/1000W PSU/144 Hz, 1440p, FreeSync Acer gaming monitor. So many geeky options, they all float my boat.
Ohh, a Mac Pro is nice as well. I love the aluminium case design. My brother has a new one (the bin) with a couple of thunderbolt displays.. He's a professional cameraman I myself have an R7 240 in my Dell Optiplex 990 workstation and I have to say it performs very well for what I paid for it (25$). Tough choice
The Z400 sounds cool, but the 390s and 144Hz 1440p monitor would be a no-brainer for me, unless you need another desktop for some reason.
Yea, I'm kinda settled on the 390s and the monitor. I still have, after 4 years, my old FX-6100 sitting around. It's in my old ASRock Extreme 4 motherboard, in my old Xigmatek ASGard Pro case. I really want to turn that into a dedicated video capture machine.
I overclocked my 750 a little bit. Got an approximate 10% performance gain out of it, which is worth it IMO. Only negative thing I've noticed so far is that the temps are about 15°C hotter, but there still under 80°C, so everything is good I guess.
holy crap how did i get here this place is so weird i am by no means a computer whiz and totally don't belong in Offtopic/Hardware
For just getting a PC running, used it fine. Wipe it and go. Also, I haven't had too much of a problem with used HDDs. They do last a long time.
I have no idea why but there's a $140 500Gb drive for $7. https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/seagate-internal-hard-drive-st9500424as Amazon says one left in stock.
Wot? how? Also, if you think the CAD price is higher than the sun, come to Aussie Land, where our dollar is worth shit and prices are higher than the US. Just did a quick google translation, the CAD dollar is HIGHER than the Aussie one at the moment. Just look at this! CAD: http://www.ncix.com/detail/msi-geforce-gtx-980-ti-23-110308-1277.htm AUD: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=193_1766&products_id=32234 And like I said, our dollar is worth even less than the CAD dollar right now.
I had a few double installs of stuff created by crappy beta software, but mostly it was apple backing up 60 (!) GB of stuff from my phone 3 times separately because it's jailbroken. I'm going to install iTunes on my HDD so I don't need to deal with that.
