Garfield Heights is to be one of the first largely custom suburban maps for BeamNG.Drive. Inspired by the outer districts of Chicago, it is a multi-neighborhood cut of the suburbs outside of a major city. It carries with it an autumnal theme, working streetlights, and a legion of custom models and textures. V0.7 - 2018/10/27 As always, the map is far from done, but although it is still listed as Work-In-Progress, it can be downloaded within this post. In this update, I've improved various older areas with with more detailed textures, both custom and borrowed. Also to be found are some harsher curbs, a few improved LODs, and, oh yeah, the start of a new district of the map. ToDo: Expand, improve, and properly realize Duquesne Square: the new district Seal up remaining 'holes' in the map Polish off assets, and provide extensive LODs
A suburban map will be nice, there isn't anything similar at the moment. One suggestion I have though, would be to categorize the houses by age or style. At one end of the map there could be old pre war homes, and as you progress to the other side you pass through modern 50s/60s houses, 70s split levels, and then larger suburban homes from the 80s/90s/00s. That way periodic photos would be easier, and it would also feel more realistic as if the suburb had been developed in stages as time went by.
That's probably not a bad plan, at present the district seen above is just a jumble of different styles and eras. There is a little rhyme and reason to it: wide faux clapboard and stone-fronted houses sit more toward the western edge of the district, while narrow brick-and-mortar chicago bungalows sit toward the east. I also planned the map to contain multiple districts, so there should be some concentration of styles in the final version.
The first public beta has been released for Halloween/Day of the Dead, though I fear that some of our community closer to the date line may have gotten this too late for the former. This is more of an early treat than a full public beta, hence the lack of repository download. Again, bear in mind that this level is greatly unfinished, and lacks full polish in most of its rather limited area. Let me know of any problems you experience.
OMG i waited so long for a map like that! For now this map is just great and much fun, hope to have some more in the future.
Thanks, all for your kind words. Just a quick test: is the TOD system working okay? I've had problems with it in the past, and want to make sure it won't be an issue. It should look like it does in the second screen above. ktheminecraftfan - You can use the buildings, so long as you credit me. Just bear in mind that more houses and possibly some polish will be added to the map and its assets in the future. HadACoolName - Thanks, though I'm not really sure what update strategy I'd like to apply to this. I was originally wanting to avoid feature creep with only one or two incremental releases along the way, but I'm undecided on whether that's a good plan or not.
It works fine here, at a certain daytime the lights go on/off which is really cool =) Just as the rest of the map.
the map isnt downloading for me,when i try to download it it takes foever, and then it stops mid-download,when i try to open it it says its invalid. ive downloaded it about 3 times already and i am still having the issue. it might be an issue with my internet idk but i tried it for the 4th time,it finally worked
Such a great clean map. Fun to role-play on but when will be the next update to have grass texture? It ruins the fun when u can see white squares. Other than that great work.
i love this. u need to hurry up and finish cuz it i awesome. keep up the good work. it looks really good.
Let him take his time, don't rush him. He can take as much time as he needs to perfect this beauty of a map.
