Strange laptop squealing noise

    How loud is it and at what times do you notice the squeal go away? Does the squeal slowly die down when you shut the laptop off? And do you notice any changes in battery life or the laptop's behaviour aside from the login issue you mentioned?

    No I didnt,but the laptop has been dead for a while now and I am using a dell inspiron 530 which doesnt have a low pitched squel noise, just fan noise. I didnt notice any battery life changes either.
    Like the hard drive had crashed (well not crashed, but unsuable)

    So does the laptop still turn on, just with a boot device error of some sort?
