Lots of people want to make maps, a few people have done tutorials, but they're all video, and that doesn't help me here with a rubbish internet connection, with an even worse wireless connection that's prone to constant dropouts. IF I fix it it's going to involve me taking the DSL modem out back and sinking a few .40 calibre rounds into it. So yeah, if anyone does a web-page tutorial on how to make a map and NOT a video, I'd be grateful. So yeah seriously, we need a web-based tutorial, not some video somewhere, if anyone knows of any, I can get started making a map, i'd promise to finish it enough to be playable and enjoyable and that it'd run pretty good on my config (so as to be playable on lesser-video-equipped machines). I have a recent i7 k-series and a rubbish 7850 2gb video board, lots of desire to make Beam maps, but little clue how to do anything besides fool with the terrain. Like how to add in decal roads that don't look like they eat half the tire with the decal height... and things like that. Like, how big is TOO big, I want to put a highway into it and all with some overpasses and hills/valleys, a bunch of side roads of varying quality, and material. What's the biggest map I can make in BEAM, and where's the setting to adjust it, how do I import a height-map, etc, what's a good setting for performance vs detail on how close the heightmap's vertices should be without sacrificing detail or performance. For me, canyon of speed runs about 15-20fps depending on where you are, i'd like 40-60fps, like the game's maps normally have (which is good detail, really good, and great performance, usually 60fps). I can get textures, there's plenty of places for them on-line, but where's a good resource for static models, etc. Bridges, some different buildings, trees, things you SEE in a map. What's the point of making it plain and boring? clueless on how to do decal-roads though.
Why don't you just download the video, and play it locally? I use jDownloader 2 and it works great. link
Terrain creation is an art. There is a varying set of processes that creators like to use, and alot of them are effective for them. This also goes for actually creating your terrain. That may sound confusing but there are quite a few clear tutorials out there that explain fully some of these processes. Asking us to tell you how to make a map is pointless. We may give feedback, but overall if you are trying to make a map you already know what you want to do as hinted in your post. You can ask us for our advice, but you are the end decision maker. You decide what you want to do. (I think I just made my post here into a mess but just shout me out @Driv3r1142 if you have anything to add or say.)
Where are these clear tutorials/guides.. All of them confuse me because whenever I follow processes something stupid happens because either not enough pictures are provided or they try to explain things in too few words and accidentally forget that sometimes that makes things no longer idiot proof, and even I cannot follow them at some point. This is usually the case. What everyone really wants is a way to make height map enbeded roads that are smooth without getting confused in blender or something and without using the T3D integrated terrain editor. In response to the original poster. If you want to make a UK themed road be prepared to edit original road textures into more European ones [easiest part I'd say], model/texture proper structures which means you are going to want some background knowledge on modeling and texturing.
That is the simplest way.. you clearly didn't read my post thoroughly. I've been making maps for 2 years I still can't make roads quite as smooth as I'd like to.
ah yeah you mean blender roads , hight maps and things like that ? Yes, thats right, I didnt talked about that in the video, may I should do a Video about this
so how do you go about importing cuustom models ect? i have a 3d model of a highway i want to use can i import it?
Sure you have to Export it as .dae , then it put it in a folder of your map like misc and then open the misc folder in the map Editor and open the high way object, you should apply textures First if there are no ones before applied...
ive managed to get the model in but my usuall way of applying textures (in cycles render) dosnt seem to aply them across, how do you apply them?
In all honesty, Im not sure how relevant it still is but the tutorial I made (link in my signature) is a pretty good start.
Your tutorial still is relevant in many ways however it was created before the experimental days and the virtual file system became the law of the land...if I'm not mistaken. That tutorial was my first taste of figuring out how to get a heightmap into BeamNG and in many respects is the foundation for what I can do today. The opportunity at hand to ask if you intend on updating your tutorial is shall we say,...overwhelming. Regardless, thanks for a great tutorial!
Hopefully this is useful to you (the current terrain I'm working on has super smooth roads using this technique), I don't really go in detail with the entire process though only a segment. One of the problems with an entire tutorial is that map making is such a complicated and long process that making a tutorial covering everything would be an enormous undertaking.
the guys using the sims3 map creator for making roads are absolutely brilliant. the community made maps are really good so far. crimson valley needs more everything its such a great piece of road.
