Ah, I don't know if it'll run Windows 10 then, since it should be more qualitative, but still as old as that old Medion downstairs here. Which can only run Windows 7 and under, so... You'll see, and if in trouble, https://www.debian.org/. Or any other Linux that you like, like Ubuntu, OpenSuse, etc. etc.

I can tell you it will, you could run Windows 10 on a ThinkPad T4X series with a single core Pentium M. Windows 10 is surprisingly light weight compared to older versions prior to popular believe.

After using my Windows 8.1 install for a little bit I already like it lots more than 10. Everything seems to just be slightly faster.

Well, it's definitely more lightweight than Vista. I would always believe anyone who say anything that includes Windows 10 being better than 8 and 8.1 though.
    So... All good then?
I have to say, Windows 10 has a way nicer layout than 8.1. Also, you could almost use it without Classic Shell. Almost.

    Yes.

Long answer: Pretty much all of them. Your CPU is underpowered, 4GB RAM isn't good enough for gaimng, and integrated graphics are crap. The GPU should be a priority, of course. What's your upgrade budget?

Go for a new GPU. Check if your Power Supply meets the wattage the GPU needs. And add some ram. Check if you can get the same module(s) again.

The i3 isn't overkill but it will do fine with the most games.

So far, no. CPU usage refuses to go over 10% before horrific lag prevents anything as simple as typing. However I am yet to get the apple drivers installed, its so far taking half an hour to unzip thanks the the aforementioned lag issues.

And if my 70 year old grandfather can use 8 without classic shell, I'm sure is technologically competant folk can ;)

Holy crap. When was the last driver update on that thing?
My problem with the metro screen (or how is it called in English?) is that you have a bunch of shiny symbols, but you have no real structure in it as long as you don't make a seven-mile-long pack of symbol blocks... I'd die for a metro screen with proper folders, you know what I mean?

Upgrade the CPU to a second-hand i5 2400 or 2500 (same socket), replace thermal paste, add a GTX 750 Ti GPU (check if your PSU is powerful enough) and a stick of 4 GB RAM extra and you should be good to go.
Should be around 150-200$ in total.

Yeah, Classic Shell. That's what I did (I mean dude, you need some kinda start menu for comfortable use).
    Really cheap. Holy crap.

don't need a start menu at all. I've never used it besides the search function which also works fine under metro

You seem to come along nicely. I need it at least every second day, pretty practical sometimes, not only the search function. You can park some things there so you don't spam your desktop screen full.

EDIT: By the way, is it worth building two Arctic F12 PWM Rev.2s onto a Hyper 212 Evo? They got 74 CFM and are 2.5cm thick.

It's the cheapest solution to achieve acceptable frame rates :)
My opinion is that used parts are fine for upgrading an older system.
    Used GTX750Ti would be 100$
    Used i5 2400 would be 60$
RAM & thermal paste 30$ max.

nah, I have nothing to park there. Wasn't sublime, hit the windows key type "sub" hit enter and it's open. Quicker than mousing over a list to find it. Visual studio I only get as far as the keys win, v, I, enter.
Control panel, shut down and device manager can all be found in windows plus X. I found nothing in the start menu that can't be found quicker via keyboard shortcuts except the search feature that works via shortcuts too.

hence why I didn't miss the start menus absence

Not bad, I already forgot about the possibilities that you can have when buying used electronics on Amazon and - most of all - Ebay. You have to watch out for how good the quality is though. The note "Never overclocked" is worth a lot when it's about CPUs for example.
Yeah, makes sense. Really nice that there even is a start menu of any sorts. I mean, you could get along with a simple searching bar eiher, but anyway.

that's why metro made no difference to me. Hit windows key and metro shows. Start typing, it starts searching. It is a zero impact change

I think you don't even see the difference... :p
Also, you still use Windows 8.1 I assume?

I did upgrade to 10 and had to make zero changes to my usage. I use keyboard shortcuts for everything. Mice are slow and inefficient
