    > Windows 7 VS Windows 8 <

What's your opinion on both, and what are the advantages/disadvantages in each one?

I'd just like opinions really, I've used both and just want to see what the public think.

(Please only post a reply on the system you've used, you can't judge the other one without actually using it.)

    Fire away.

When I tried to play a game based on the DX7 on Windows 8, I had only 22 fps, while on Windows 7 60 fps. So Windows 8 is not suitable for old games.

I think windows 98, xp and 7 are great. They have all done what i needed at there time of release and been perfectly stable. Windows 8 is too much of a "consumption" platform for me. I dont feel that it is as productive as previous iterations and find the idea of 2 interfaces a bit jarring. Even the person who designed metro said it won't work properly because it has no similarities to the desktop interface. The reason this is important is quite confusing to say but here goes. Have you ever been doing something and then forgotten what you were doing half way through? This is a lot more common in windows 8 because of the switching between interfaces. When it switches there are no familiarities and this causes a lot of people to forget what they are doing. These are the general words of the person that designed the concept.

Which version of Windows would be better for the average gamer?

(In examples of performance, opening speeds and how easy it is to find a certain game if you had many files)

    Fire your opinion guns away.

Depends what you class the average gamer as. For old games as well as the newest get windows 7. If you are going to play exlusively new games get windows 8 if performance is all you care about.
If you like the metro interface then get windows 8. If not get windows 7 or download some programs on windows 8 meaning you will never need to use metro again.

Its all personal opinion and there is no such thing as average here. Some people still swear by xp but you wont be playing any dx11 games on xp.
So if you want to know what to buy then you are probably best going to a local shop and trying both on their pc's then decide which os to get then.

I moved from 7 to 8 at the end of last year and I can honestly say, I would never go back. I just don't see a point. I've got a machine with $2500 worth of gear in it and haven't had a single problem with 8 so far. Zero problems with drivers and every game or program has worked flawlessly. Also, 8 has increased my workflow speed just by the way the interface is set up(using keyboard shortcuts etc). People who bitch about Metro or Windows 8 usually haven't used in for more than a couple of hours and granted, it takes a couple of hours of getting used to, but it's well worth it.

For anyone who's torn between the two, I say try both out for about a week each, see which one you like better and if you miss the start button in 8 enough to complain about it, you can download a program to get it back; or wait till October for 8.1 when they'll be putting in back in.

I have windows 8. It works beautifully, I can run BeamNG at 60 FPS. I use a Nvidia GTX660 so yeah. Windows 8 for me.

I can see this turning into the biggest argument known to mankind.

Windows 7 and Windows 8 both have good and bad points. You cant just simply say that someone else is wrong and state they haven't used it long enough. Personally windows 7 does everything i want, i have no need to upgrade to windows 8. I also don't want adverts in my operating system (Windows 8.1 comes with adverts in the local search bar: http://www.engadget.com/2013/07/03/microsoft-bing-ads-windows-8-1-smart-search/ )

But that goes without saying if i had to use Windows 8 i would be just fine. I would have to modify it a little first mind ,but overall it would do the job.
Aforementioned modifications in a link to avoid screwing up formatting:
    Code:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqUAg3cQxQo
In short, use what you like, but dont state other people are inferior or wrong because they don't agree with you. Everyone has different priorities and for me Win7 suits them better.

To be honest though, if i could run windows applications natively in linux i would have ditched windows a while ago.

Windows 8 is beautiful on touch devices. I love browsing the internet on a win8 touch laptop, it just makes browsing much more involved and natural. But win8 on legacy input devices like keyboard and mouse is no better than win7 in my opinion for daily tasks. If anything I would say that win8 is a pain in some regards because of its enhanced touch features that you cannot make use of with mouse.

I have seen gaming performance improvements with win8 when running modern games, 5-10 fps simply because of a difference in OS is good, so i wouldnt ignore it as a gaming platform over win7.

I currently run a win7 rig, but work with win XP, 7 and 8 at work. My rig runs beamng at about 60 fps on an old i5 and a gtx660ti, so certainly not a top end machine but i have had little to no issues running 7. But when i went from xp to 7 i had the same concerns, much like i did when i went from 2000 to xp, or 98 to 2000 or 95 to 98.............. this happens every generation and the arguments are always the same!

I've always had the latest OS available, XP, then Vista, then 7, and finally 8. So far, Windows 8 is faster, more optimized in general, less RAM usage, loads faster, and all games and programs work perfectly, so I definitely stay with Windows 8.

Personally, I like Win 7 much better then Win 8 ON PC

However, I would like Win 8 on Tablet, after all it was designed for tablet. It seems foolish to put a touch-tablet OS on PC. Win 7 is better at handling stress and I can be more productive on Win 7. But I can post about Win 8 as I have used it alot. I frequently get 'lost' in Win 8 as there are so many menus and slides and built-in feature that I won't use, like Xbox gaming zone (or whatever it's called). I like Win 7 because it has the customizable abilities of WinNT systems and the optimizations of new MS OSes.

    So, Win7

Win8 is far more "future proof" than Win7, Win8 is a lot more capable and well-optimized. If all you're going to do is game with the newest games, then jump on the Win8 train. However, if you want to content create, play vintage games or do anything requiring switching windows often, get Win7. As above mentioned, the way Win8's GUI is, it's easy to lose your train of thought, or just get straight up lost. Also, back-compatibility for games pre-Win7 seems to be quite severely lacking. Some work, others implode and corrupt all your saves.

    Win8
-Better performance on newer software, runs better on weaker specs
-Signifigantly faster boot time than Win7
-two completely different interfaces which are designed for very different workflows (both good on their own) were stitched together by a drunk monkey and it shows when using the OS
    -Questionable functionality with older software
-Very in your face built-in app store (take this as you will).
    Win7
-Worse performance in newer, professionally-developed games/apps than 8, but only slightly.
-Interface is smooth and intuitive for more advanced (don't need the little ones to open Word for them) users.
-Seemingly better back compatibility than Win8
-If there is a built-in app store it isn't rubbed in your face

People usually complain about the menu, and I don't even use it. I use the normal desktop, with a simple mod to have a start button and gadgets (the start button was added in 8.1).
