I think this game would benefit from DX12 support. I'm running Windows 10 now, and I do need the performance boost as even with my beastly rig, it can have a hard time with trees, and other plants. Will you add DX12 support?

There is no plan for DirectX12 support for now.
DirectX12 also means Windows 10 only.

Thanks for the reply. Windows 10 64 bit is is getting up there, so it wouldn't be a bad idea.

It would be a bad idea. A lot of our users are using Windows 8, Vista (sigh) and 7.

If Rise of the Tomb Raider can do it, then this game could. Rise of the Tomb Raider has support for DirectX 12 even though you can play it on Windows 7. http://steamcommunity.com/games/391220/announcements/detail/870690772757808963 I understand that Direct 12 wouldn't work on Windows 7, as its a Windows 10 exclusive, but the game could default to 11 on Windows 7.

If we switch to a new render backend, we most likely have to deprecate the old one. We don't have a 50 people render team on our side to support all of them at once ;)

I'm not going to upgrade to Windows 10, so I can't use DX12. This sort of switch would leave me out entirely. Not cool.

Plus, Vulkan is better than DX12 - it supports GPU computing like OpenCL, and it isn't platform dependant, so old Windows and a possible unix port would be supported.

I would think so, vastly so, plus a host of other benefits like not being a Windows-only API.

How can you say that knowing almost nothing of Vulkan?

    DX12 vs Vulkan?
    • Both are low-level APIs that will take more advantage of CPU while also lessening overall load
    • Vulkan is a continuation of Mantle 1.0, the "foundation" of Vulkan is made up of parts of Mantle.
    • Vulkan was previously known as glNext or OpenGL Next Gen
    • DirectX 12 is a massive overhaul of DX11, but still only supports Windows
    • Vulkan supports Windows, Linux, and OSX
They are about the same, except Vulkan is open source and multi-platform. The obvious winner is Vulkan

I'll quickly add a point against using DX12, it'd require new graphic cards for many users. I know DX12 switch is out of discussion, just wanted to add this,

You most certainly can - just use the /s tag at the end of the post or else it's difficult to tell.

/s is supposed to be "end sarcasm" amongst quite a lot of internet communities, plus the strikethrough actually works as a way to sort of betray your own words, indicating sarcasm.
