Greetings everyone! I am in the process of making a new map. This one is extremely ambitious but I feel confident that I can pull it off. In short, it is going to be as close-to-life of a map as I can create. This map is using real terrain from NASA and Google Maps. It is of the town of Deering in New Hampshire; this is my hometown. A couple of other surrounding towns got sucked into this because of the odd shape of the town's borders. The map is about 65 square kilometers and will have over 40 miles of roads on it. The yucky but real map texture is going to be replaced; it's only a placeholder for me. This map will take a long time to finish I anticipate. There needs to be lots of details put in and I am just scratching the surface after even 10 hours of work. Current update: Roads are painted and placed for the most part. Next I plan on working in some vegetation and higher resolution textures. People to credit: NASA, Google, The Beam Team (for assets), and the old people of this sleepy town Pic dump: You'll often find me streaming here
Yes sir! --- Post updated --- Little plug: You'll often find me streaming here you should also subscribe
So far so good More or less, my hometown is the base. Some changes have to be made but lots of it are 100% real
This looks really nice so far. I've attempted to do the same thing twice. (Make a stretch of highway around where I live with a satellite image and terrain.party heightmap, etc...) But I don't think I have the time, patience, or knowledge of the terrain editor in general to make maps right now... So I really hope this works out for you alot better than it did for me. I think I'll keep an eye on your livestream occasionally, maybe I'll learn something useful.
Today's progress sees all roads complete for now. A large amount of time was spent on areas near the lake such as the dam that needed to be replicated. Didn't take pics; sorry
Thats all good to hear where I am there is 930 miles of roads to deal with and its a very old city too so you have to deal with levels of madness that would kill the most powerful computers on the forum...
I cant wait. Will this be a FPS killer map? I have a GT 740 and a FX 6300 if this helps for what i mean in FPS
I like the idea behind it.. Keep working on it One question.. How did you get this hightmap from Google maps??
Although it is possible to pull terrain data from Google Earth via Sketchup (well, last I checked), I think this data comes straight from NASA's SRTM. This is a bookmark that I keep around for whenever I need some terrain data:http://www.webgis.com/srtm3.html You'll need a GIS program in order to use the data (I recommend Quantum GIS). Just be aware that most data is pretty low-res, but you can occasionally get some extremely high-resolution bare Earth data for specific cities. That link leads to 90-meter, but New York, as a for-instance, has one foot DEMs.
