On obd2 and up cars abs works wonders. Unless your on loose gravel you will slow down faster with it. As for BMW wanting to give the best of both worlds, that's why in my opinion they haven't made an actual sports car in years. If you load it up with all the bits to make it quiet and comfortable with the leather and the this and that, turning all that off doesn't make it a sports car. It makes it a luxury car you can crash easier. Again if your into nice things by all means just call it what it is.
They may not be sports cars but they can be pretty damn fast. Although the electronics certainly help them out a lot. It would be neat if they did make a lightweight though. I imagine they would be able to work wonders.
I single porsche and bmw out a lot but to be honest they only build what people want to buy, so when I go on a tirade, just know that I know that. Here is an example. When I still worked at the Porsche outfit there was a day I worked on 2 cars. They both needed very minor service but I took them both out within a few hours of each other for test drives so I had a really cool chance to see what a 40 year split did. First car was a dead stock 997.2 Carrera. 3100 pounds with about 340 horsepower out of its sad audi derived flat six. The car was fast comfortable and smooth. Seats felt nice, cable actuated shifter feels smooth. Ideal commuter car. Next was a project the shop built for a customer a decade before I even got there. 1973 carrera RS clone, of wich the real deal is worth over a million dollars today (I have photos of Seinfelds famous 73 RS with factory sunroof in our shop.) Now this cars spec sheet reads like a honda. 2200 pounds on a bad day with a 2.7 liter pumping out just over 200 bhp. Koni shocks and springs. WHAT A BLAST. Fast nimble and fucking planted. The car only leaned enough. It turned in wonderfully and nothing you could do would make the back come out on dry road it was absolutely planted. The 73 was an entirely different class of car from the 2010. Maybe around a big track the newer car would still win but make one thing clear. Only one of them was a sports car. Too bad I'll never get to do a back to back with an e92 and a e30 m3. Am I too much of a purist? Yes. Is it unreasonable to say it's not a sports car because it's comfortable and has a few extra pounds? I'll admit it yeah it is unreasonable. Should a sports car be unreasonable? I wouldn't have it any other way.
A proper hardcore sporty car would probably mess with BMW's brand image and company 'synergy' Although Porsche have some fairly hardcore cars in their line up along side the more luxury ones, for example the 911R. However if you like your cars lightweight and grippy you should probably try to get your hands on a Lotus, Caterham and so on.
Your right on the money! I was lucky enough to drive a 2009 gt3 with the 3.8 in it and that car is 50 percent sports car 50 percent sex. It also has the "good non audi" engine so the cylinder wont be scored to hell by 60k miles like countless m96 and m97 engines we had to send to the machine shop. as far as I'm concerned the british do it better than anyone else. I ADORE lotus and Caterham. My dream sports car is an early lotus Elise with a built k20a swapped into it running individual throttle bodies. Imagine the first Gen Elise. It was quick with its rover 120hp engine because it weighed 1600 pounds. Now Imagine you swap in a 300bhp Honda 2.0 engine and your cooking with nuclear fire. Makes my blood boil thinking about it. God save the queen and god save lotus.
Clever ot: The director of sales for Holden practically admitted that the next gen Commodore isn't as good as the current one. https://www.wheelsmag.com.au/news/1610/the-reason-holden-kept-the-commodore-name
I would love to have a Lotus Elise someday. They are pretty good on fuel economy too As for a Lotus Elise with a 300hp engine the Exige is probably a decent place to look for some approximate figures.
For sure. The exige is gorgeous but they would most likely be out of my price range. I also want to keep it NA. people have successfully done the k swap into the s1 and s2 chassis, and a mildly built k20 would get you to 300bhp no problem. I'm really interested in a challenging project where I would learn a lot in the process. It would be extremely educational to put an engine in a chassis never intended to house it.
You got me fair and square. Hopefully in British racing green? truly an all time great . that car had it all man and on top of that she'd hit 170 with enough room.
Speaking of Lotuses, apparently the king of SoCal canyon racers drives a heavily tuned Lotus Elise. Also, I wonder if there are, anywhere, RS Watanabe wheels that will fit a Chevy S10...
That's been the plan the whole time. Holden has sold the Insignia before, I dunno why they wont just do it again. Instead they taint the Commodore with it
I watched from about 15 feet away as someone backed a Mazda Tribute into a pretty new Focus today at school. Grey car, no question about it.
Don't forget the Kluger was grey too But yeah the lighter grey car is legally at fault. The Skoda Superb was morally at fault.
