Looking at some laptops, and found some "good" spec'ed acers on newegg at mid $600 range. I5-7200U with 950M 2GB card, 256GB OS SSD with a 1TB 5400 RPM HDD I have never had a acer laptop before, so i'm skeptical on build quality etc. ( I have had, ASUS HP, Lenovo) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...edicated_graphics_card-_-34-315-671-_-Product Is it worth skipping over Skylake for Kabylake? Looking to maybe do some light gaming, mostly it will be used for auto diagnostics though. Thoughts? (if you guys have any other laptops in mind for this price point and below post them on up.)
My mother recently bought an Acer laptop by my recommendation. I've noticed no problems with it in the past 6 months or so that we've had it.
Sonys are very good, and Lenovos are also very good. I haven't really heard good things about Acers, though.
I'd recommend going for the version that ships a 960m. That is, if you are willing to pay a little more.
I completely disagree with this. Every Sony computer or peripheral I've had has been horrible and/or broken out of the box.
If you've had HP then you know the truest form of laptop garbage (source: own two) they blow GPUs faster than macbooks and have general crappy issues from what I've experienced, but they are cheap. Acer make decent middle of the line quality laptops, don't expect anything fancy like an aluminium chassis but they are pretty solid all things considered and the one I've had since 2007 still runs daily. As for CPUs I would say stick with skylake, on a laptop the GPU will always be the bottleneck at that price range and really anything more powerful is going to be a massive price increase with little performance gain. So honestly I would say go for the acer, seems like a really nice price for what you are getting.
It's solid. Hate the brushed aluminum surface because fingerprints, but otherwise it's been good, lacks bloatware. Only major complaint is a flimsy optical drive tray, but it never gets used so it isn't a problem. And the only you linked doesn't have one.
Acer makes fairly decent quality laptops, my sisters has been going strong now for about three years without any servicing, It's "starting to slow down now" her way of hinting that I need to remove all the viruses she's probably installed with Sims mod's and give it a good clean out with my compressor. But other than that you get a thumbs up from me as far as Acer is concerned. Just stay away from HP/Compaq.
Couldn't agree more with this. my current HP laptop is only 2 or so years old and its dead.. so that's were i'm at now lol. --- Post updated --- Other than Acer what else would you guys recommend for this price point? or is this looking to be the best "bang for the buck".
Sager laptops have great value, I'd recommend looking at some of their products. As for other companies, I'd recommend a dell Inspiron (the one with the 960m)
Well.. finally took the plunge and ordered the i7559 - I7-6700HQ 960M 4GB variant First time I have ever bought a Dell and I7 based laptop, will see how it goes.
Update to this, Purchased a Samsung M.2 500GB SSD to complement the slowww as molasses 5400 RPM 1TB HDD. (going use the SSD for the boot drive, and use the HDD for games and other auto stuff). Looking to buy an extra 8gb stick of ram, possibly going see if I can swap out the 1080P screen for the 4K screen, possible? What would I need?

I7-6700HQ @ 2.6 GHz Turbo Boost to 3.5 GHz 1080P Model 1920x1080 High Settings Vsync off GTX 960M 4 GB 8GB RAM SAMSUNG 500GB 850 EVO M.2 SATA SSD OS Drive (I bought this seperate) 1TB 5400 RPM HDD (Standard OS drive, I use it for games now) Yes the 960M is weak, can it game with decent FPS? yes it can. I bought this brand new from amazon for $729 USD, I couldn't find any other laptop with similar specs for this price point. I was looking at a 1060 laptop but they start at 1200+, IMO this is the best budget laptop you can find right now. Maybe when the 1050 release we will have a better options for this price point? It does have a downsides though. trackpad is not the best, but its workable. Speakers are very tinney from factory but can be fixed with a audio driver update and a registry edit. after you do that, the speakers are good. Below attached is a Beam BB. Update 6:21 PM I under volted the CPU -0.115V offset CPU temps (full load XTU stress test 3.10 GHz across all cores) 88C (stock, jet plane fan mode) 62C (under volt -0.115 offset) (dead near silent) the under volt is maintaining stability at full load 3.10 GHz its been a hour or so, ill kick it back if it loses stability. 8:23 PM I got it down to -0.140 offset, 60-62C under full load in XTU stress test (3.10 GHz across all cores.) 28C drop all around, laptop went from sounding like a jet to dead silent under load. Wahoo all while saving power.
wow! i thought they had ironed out all of the undervaluing potential in Core I series chips, quite strange really. I have a C2D T7200 that went from 1.1625V to 0.9750v with like a 20c drop with lower fan speed
the 960M is a weak card, the GTX960 desktop is quite bad as it is but the M version has limited TDP so it has significantly less performance.
