Yes. It is. That is perfect. The 290x looks like it will be $600, but we will need to see reviews of it to know if thats good. The -50 version of it (like 7970 to 7950) is the r9-290, no x.

I've been hearing that the 280x is the rebrand of a 7970 GHz edition. Its $300 price tag is really attractive. If I wasn't planning on getting a PS4 in November I would get a 290x, but 600 bucks is a little too much considering I'm gonna be upgrading my case as well as my CPU. Plus I don't really need the power the 290x offers. The 280x should be able to max pretty much any game easily. I might get the 290 if its under 400 bucks, but that is extremely unlikely.

R9-290X all the way here. It is indeed a GTX Titan killer. AMD themselves have said so and the new Mantle API backs this.

I can't tell if this is sarcasm... I think it is. :p

    Anyways, real reply here.
I think that while it may not be a Titan killer (sucks that amds next gen can't beat nvidia locked down current gen., but maybe its not a full Hawaii. Whatevs) it is still powerful enough for this hype. I'd say it is between the 780 and Titan, and is priced at the 780s price point. Slaughters the Titan in compute AFAIK. (No true reviews yet.) and I say if they have access to the new gen consoles they might as well introduce mantle. I mean, we have 8 years of GCN coming, might as well use it.

It wasn't sarcasm. It does beat the Titan.. There are benches to go along with this, and in addition to that it uses less power doing so.

I can't wait to play Battlefield 4 using Dx11 and then Mantle and compare the results and see how it does against Nvidia.

P.S: Soz for off-topic, I read the last posts and thought this was about the new GPUs and features.

It's fine, we are discussing how the 290x benefits folding. Ish.

A little off-topic, but yeah. Once you upgrade your gpu it will be beast.

If you want. If you're expecting to get better performance in games by overclocking, then don't. Your i7-3770k is definitely gonna keep up with any game without overclocking.

I've been having client crashing problems and hence not been able to fold. I'll sort this out in a bit. I am just really lazy. :p EDIT: So I have my problem fixed, was the cpu C-States fucking with my overclock on my i7. Successfully ran a night of gpu folding last night, so I will test gpu + cpu tonight to make sure its fully stable again.

So how do you guys think Mantel will affect gpu folding if it is utilized properly or even used at all? Would we expect to see the same boost in ppd as we did with beta units? Discuss your thoughts. I'm curious to see if folding will support mantel.

Re: Folding @ Home, Seti @ Home and other DC projects.

Folding will not 'support' mantle as such. GPU folding doesn't use a graphics api such as DX11 from Microsoft or the aforementioned new Mantle from AMD. Folding does not work that way, in a way it is its own API. The work units utilise and communicate with the gpu using their own code (developed by stanford), not proprietary software. Folding could most likely be implemented using Mantle but who is to say if it would be more or less efficient, and the fact Stanford can modify and revise their code whenever and as often as they please really makes a difference in keeping all the projects going. Just my 2c
