Beamng drive is such a great game and has so many features. One thing I think takes away from the gameplay is scratch marks. I mean if you were to grind your car against a wall and not get anything except a dent it just doesn't seem to make it feel right... like... something is missing. In real life a small bump can take off a good amount of paint and cause the car to look more junked (if that's even a word) up

Apparently dynamic texture/decal modifications is not very easy to do.

It's basically about adding another layer to the textures, but that is really hard tast to do, since those should also follow the car's deformation in real time. Some other games using that system have scripted damage, so it's much easier to apply.

And it should also be a layer that can affect the skin and texture of the car in real time, on top of doing it in the place that the car got scratched.

Hmm... well let's try to help the Dev's out then! Anybody have any ideas on how to implement them? maybe similar to how tire mark decals are added?

i have been asking for this before and many others too.
it appears it is really hard to do - an engine limitation i guess.
i DO however remember that there was a car mod a while ago that had a "crumbled" texture for car parts when they were damaged so it must be possible somehow. does anyone know what mod that was?

There isn't much of an idea to something that will be a breakthrough to add. At best something similar would be something like mud in a body, and even that will have to look bad using just a transparent layer over the skin that will affect the entire body, or we will have the same issue here.

Hmm... What if we did it where it was in small patches... sorta like how the broken glass texture is applied... Maybe split the car up in small invisible boxes (not so small where it lags) and the decal will be applied based on direction and maybe... if there's a dent? I mean we don't really NEED scratches for tiny little scrapes but for extreme crashes I expect that huge dents would also have huge scratches

I get what you mean, but remember JBeams. If the scrath has to follow the texture of the car it will have to follow the Jbeams too. I dont know if they would have to be Jbeamed too or just they can make it reduce CPU by having it follow the jbeam of the car, then add the rectangles and patches over the texture of the paint and increase or decrease opacity of scratches/dirtyness. Even then, it wouldn't probably look good

I tried something like that, its being made the same way as the glass textures are broken but it doesnt look that great since sometimes it doesnt appear all. I could show some screenshots if you would like?

That seems like an inventive way to try it:cool:. I remember the damage texture mod and in some cases it looked pretty good.
I could imagine trying to get a scratch texture's axis's to match any given dent geometry (vertical/horizontal-everything in between),
would be tough.....and that ahem...only begins to scratch the surface.

Rather neat idea, but, it would be hard seeing as it would require a second texture layer, but, if you have SergentFidos Oldfullsize mod, pull out the restored one, and hit it a bit, you can see an example of what he is saying, so, technically, it already exists in mods, much like extendable spoilers, I remember the mod came out maybe 2-3 years before the SBR4 even had it, that's not to say the Devs aren't innovative, just sometimes, if you look close, modders are coming up with ideas the Devs haven't thought of yet, that's also how we got the taxi, but, I don't want to spam you with a history of beamng mods, but, I'm telling you, it may already be in the game, in a mod, just look close... There is tons of neat mods that no one knows about

How did GTA V did it anyways? i know that they dont have exactly jbeams even tho they have deformation that changes the hitbox but how did they managed to get scratches to be so accurate and look good?

Im only quoting you right now, but, its extremely easier then you think.

The way i made it is a dupplicated the surface of the body and sepparated them then uved them to a scratcged texture. Next is to make them in the jbeam. It worked extremely well yet at the same time didnt.
Ill post a screenshot later to show you what i mean

Yeah, it doesn't look TOOOOOOOOOO bad.

If the dev team works on it and mixes it with some rust and mud script they can have some kind of dynamic texture and it would be nice. Its more possible than i thought then.

Still, i really hope that they prioritize other things.

That's pretty cool looking! It is apparent when I really think about this as to how difficult it will be to make this happen with a jbeamed
car and have the scratching realistically follow every dent and deform in 360 degrees. Hope this makes sense:p.

This is awesome guys! I kinda expected this thread to die really quickly but we have people giving examples, showing off a working model, and even complimenting each other on this! Hopefully the devs will see this thread, see how quickly this thread is growing, and maybe even ask people like crashmaster to help them implement this! Even if we don't see this in game for another year or so, it's still progress! Can't wait to see what other ideas we can find

One question. How many frames did you drop when adding this extra layer. Does it effect you a lot? or is it only 2-7 frames. This is another thing that can make devs want to implement this more if it doesn't make the game too much more laggy. Maybe they could even get a setting to disable it

I actually didnt notice any difference :)
I dont know when or if ill continue working on this tho since it doesnt look that great. but if you guys seem to like it a lot it might give me the proper motivation to keep it up and maybe do more then just the covet.
I started with the covet as a test to see if it actually worked, kinda like a concept.

I personally think it looks awesome! One think that bugs me (don't worry about it much unless you want) is that the decal cuts off too perfectly... if maybe you could make it overhang for each jbeam square thing (idk how it works lol) or maybe make it less abrupt and square, I think it'd look a lot better. Also it seems a little fuzzy but that might just be me.

It's up to you if you wanna continue this mod but I think it'd be awesome to have
