I will see tomorrow when the head comes off, though its not a modern aluminium engine, so the softest will bend, and those are the valves by far. I think the pistons are okay, they might have a few scratches, and maybe some tiny dents on the top, but they should be ok after a little caring :)

that's one of the reasons I only own vehicles from the 60s-70s. Whoever came up with the idea of a timing BELT either got seriously short changed at the brains counter, or they sell engines and are a marketing genius. personally I prefer timing gears to all others (nothing to break) but a chain setup is almost as good.

Yes, i thought too that its not the smartest thing. As it turned out though, a faulty water pump started the whole thing. It stopped, ripped the belt apart, then that killed the valves. I just can't imagine why the hell they put engine accessories on the timing belt what can fail causing much more trouble. Timing should be timing only, because its quite important, and the water pump should go on a separate belt like the alternator does, so if it would fail, you'd see the rising temps, and stop. Leaving you with only a broken water pump what needs to be changed. Much more simple and cheap than refurbishing the head

I have a single bar that comes down from the roof support to the dashboard, other than that it's pretty much open. I'm not too insanely worried about it, the cage was built by a professional and long time racer and he didn't say much about it so that's pretty much how it was left. I never really thought about it until you mentioned it.

It was a 1986 Dodge Daytona. It has a 2.2L 4 Cylinder Engine in it, non turbo.

Belts are quieter than chain-drive.. Probably on a big engine you'd not notice it, but smaller 4cyl engines like most Japanese cars have the belt probably made a lot of sense.

Modern chain drive engines aren't that noisy though, everyone seems to be heading back to good old chain.

Never noticed mutch noise myself, actually the quietest engine ive ever heard is the little 6 banger in my 79' f100. and its got timing gears. its so quiet infact that I once left it idling in the front yard for 3 hours while me and the guys had a BBQ about 30 feet from where it was parked.

Back in 1979 when cars were built properly?

Pretty much all the cars we deal with here in NZ, are Japanese. pretty much all of them have belt driven timing gears.. until now, which they are going back to chain.

I'd say it was a cost thing. Older japanese cars were made cheap.

How many times has it broken down in the last week haha :D

Just kidding, kinda. Here in the UK alfa have a reputation for being incredibly unreliable, but when the planets are in alignment being amazing to drive

This is my little car, I've been thinking about putting it into the game but I still have alot of 3D modeling to learn before I can even start.

    0 times so far.

:D In Finland, most peope says same thing, I don't care. I like it and hope not going to break down for a while.

In here cold, interior warms faster than in Nissan Primera (both 1999) and that's a lot for me :)
