I see some people here recommending 1x8GB DDR3 instead of 2x4GB to save one slot... I wouldn't trust them much. I don't mean to offend anyone, but if you don't know what dual channel is ... With 2x4GB you have double the bandwidth than with 1x8GB

    Re: Christmas Build Help

Using dual channel architecture provides a 10% increase in bandwidth at best with only very slightly reduced latencies. Recall how two graphics cards in SLI/Crossfire don't actually provide double the processing power of a single card.

Unless you're pushing the envelope with your build, the advantages of dual channel are almost non existent. Besides, if you really need it, you can buy another 8GB stick and enjoy 16GB RAM along with the negligible advantages of dual channel while keeping two slots free.

Saying that I'm untrustworthy for making a totally valid (and correct) statement, then feeding OP false information is just plain rude.

    Re: Christmas Build Help

Theoretically it doubles the bandwidth, although in real life bandwidth increases around 90%. That 10% you mention is an increase in performance, not in bandwidth, and that's because all operations are not 100% bound to memory bandwidth, but if you can cut the reading/writing times by half it makes a difference.

In this case, with an intel CPU that will use all 100% of RAM bandwidth (AMD CPUs are slower using ram), and with 4 RAM slots available, I don't see a reason to go cheap on this where you can get an increase in overall performance and a more noticeable increase in high demanding tasks.

P.D: I checked the prices of 1x8 vs 2x4 and there is a difference of 1€... So definitely go for 2x4 that costs the same and will grant a more or less noticeable increase in performance depending on the task you're running.

    My mistake.

To mitigate this "hurr durr spreading thermal paste VS squishing"-esque debate, I'm just gonna abort thread. It's up to OP, and the votes are even.

That is one hell of an ugly looking case... It looks like those wannabe high end pcs 10years old have. Why don't you just go with something a little bit cleaner and maybe bigger? For 80$ you can already get a lot of good looking ATX cases with sidepanel
and 5fans for great airflow! I was on that site, newegg and if you set 75-100$ and atx full/big tower, than you will find tons of good stuff.

If that is your taste, ok. But if you want a case with tons of room, clean looks, and a good finish go for corsair. 900D is a bit expensive, but a but a 550d should be good. They look the best IMO.

and have you ever USED, a seagate? HMMM, while im not saying western digital is bad (as its not, by ANY Means) but neither is seagate, my 1tb seagate hdd is pehnomeal, i get almost instant load times in beamng drive, as well as other games (except gta iv, but, well, its gta IV, which isnt the most optomized game in the world, well, actually, the only slow loading part is at first, ill be at a black screen for a min or 5, then it loads, and everything is perfect, and quite fast loading as well, dont even get pop up textures (at least not that often :p)) but yeah, seagate is just as good as western digital :p

That first case looks quite nice for the price. And you could go with a corsair 350d, isn't more expensive than the ones you have on that list, doesn't look that childdish and is pretty high quality compared to this plastic crap.
But to get a 900d would be really really stupid, this is, what concerns cases one of the best you could get and is huge, putting this hardware in it would look totally ridicoulus.

I've decided on the case on the left. Great deal, looks futuristic yet simple, and has great reviews. Also, I added in a wireless adapter. If I convince my dad to order this stuff this week we'd save $100. The total right now is $1,300

Edit: Alright, we're going to order the parts Sunday. I'm not sure why not today, but I won't be back until Sunday. Will cyber week on Newegg end after Sunday or am I going to have to convince him to act faster?

While the HIVE series is ok, watch it and keep the receipt. I have one and it seems to push it's rated load, but they have reports of failures. i would not run it within 50w of it's rated load for sustainability.

    Re: Christmas Build Help

lol Sorry but you say that as if the ambiance lighting is going to give you better performance. Anyways, good luck with your first build. Going a little over budget is better than having to substitute with cheap components and unexpectedly having to upgrade sooner down the road than later. During the build remember to avoid static shocks at all costs. It's a fun and excitting process putting together a first build but don't zap those parts because that fun and excitement will quickly dissipate when the system doesn't boot.
