Ok, my setup is a i7 870 @ normal 3.6 Ghz with a HD 7770 in a stock xps 8100 case. Long story short, I ran OCCT for 30 seconds and got to 83C then it lagged so much I couldn't turn it off and had to hard shutdown. The max long run temps is 75C, max normal is 80C and max max p) is 90C. All temps are here. CPU idle: 37-39C load: ???, on normal gaming 76 or so, stress tests IDK. Startup: 27C GPU idle: 32C load: 64C fan 25-55% HDD:40C On speedfan temps 1,2 and 3 are 127, 22, -61C Ambient, 77F, 35C. I might get this cooler, this fan to add to the cooler and this new case fan. I have heard that you can turn off hyperthreading to get up to 10C cooler, is that true?
Lol just throw a new CPU cooler on there and check you've got adequate case ventilation for your components. No need to resort to such extremes such as turning off Hyperthreading! Heck, my ambient temperature used to get up to 47C (Dat Australian Summer) and my PC coped virtually fine (virtually, because the PSU was cheap as hell and blew up one day). Those components (minus the PSU) still work to this day. (Athlon X2 +5200, 4GB DDR2, 8800GTS, can't remember mobo model I think it was a Gigabyte GA-S3-......)
Dat weird texan winter, yesterday it got to 85F now its 38F. My computer woke up at 19C. I am getting a new CPU cooler but that one looks like it would rip the CPU out of the mobo. :S
first of all, thermal compound, a load of dell computers are using the BTX standard instead of ATX, meaning that not too much can be done with it. If the PC wasn't overheating before just replace the thermal compound, you wil also be running at stock clock speeds and i doubt your cooler is less good than an intel stock cooler. Can you post a picture of the interior of your case to help us get an idea of what we're dealing with?
Cleaned a month ago, so it won't cool me by 10C Used DYNEX, generic bestbuy stuff, I reappyed it a month ago when I reattached my cooler. (I hadn't cleaned it for 2 years so it needed it.) It was overheating before and yes, I have the stock case and CPU cooler.
Don't get that cooler. Either get: Corsair A70 Coolermaster 212 (+, evo, whatever, it's the same thing just different fans basically) Xigmatec Dark Knight 2 ZALMAN CNPS10X They are all basically the same thing, choose what you want. And just get basically any case fan, make sure you measure the size first.
All of them are big, I have an 80mm cooler right now. (Go intel!) Also the 212 is incompatible with my 1556 mobo. I'll have pics soon. - - - Updated - - - OK, I don't know if fans are measured like TVs (diagonally) or just straight across. Measurement one will be diagonal, two will be straight, 3 will be the extra room. In mm. CPU cooler Fan 110-80-~50 Heatsink 100 (round)-2 Case Fan 130-95-none. It's a stock xps 8100 case if you need more measurements. Also, it is a vertical mobo, so I don't want it to rip the CPU out then crush the videocard.
How did you apply the thermal paste? You should put a pea size amount in the middle and then just put the cooler down on top. Spreading it around creates air pockets so don't do that if you did. For a cooler upgrade the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro should fit.

It's a circle, measure it from any angle! Don't measure the casing around the fan haha. Whichever size your fan is closest to (comparing to standard fan sizes) is what the fan is.
Before ordering a cooler just yet try removing the current one and clean the bottom of it with isopropyl alcohol or whitespirit. Use coffee filters to do the wiping and also remember to clean the CPU. I reckon the cooler isn't mounted right. Ok, probably getting this but it seems kinda weighty, should I put my computer on its side? Also, some reviews say it clears normal RAM, so that's a plus.
Turned off hyperthreading as my computer hanged once @ 76C. The recommended max is 72.6 so I'm a bit scared. :S If it dies I will have no PC for a year at least. - - - Updated - - - Well, I now seem to run 6C cooler during max load....
How is your ventilation? If you don't have adequate ventilation then you're going to have issues like this. I was dealing with this until I installed some new fans in my PC a few months ago, the idea is that you ram as much air through the computer as physically possible. When I did it my temperatures went down from 70 to about 30 degrees. It looks like a pretty small case and that isn't going to take long to warm up. Just add fans, Leave the side off and point an industrial fan at it if you have to. Just get something to move heat away.
Make sure the 'sink is on tight. I remember back when I had a Geforce 7600GS I had to overclock it to the very limit to get anything reasonable out of it. I was putting on thermal paste but I didn't put the heatsink on right and it took me a week to notice it was hitting over 250 degrees F. It sucked anyway since it was bottlenecked by my shitty CPU and motherboard. The motherboard absolutely DID NOT tolerate ANY sort of CPU overclock. (3.2 GHz P4)
Average, can't do anything inside the case for that. Might lay it on it's side and leave the side off. Redoing the heatsink tomorrow, I spread it not squish it. Otherwise I am getting the knight.
