I've decided that the cost of insuring a car is very far out of my budget, so I've been looking at this little moped to buy as soon as I turn 16: upload_2017-9-3_16-54-13.jpeg

It's a 2018 Honda Metropolitan. It's cute, it's practical (decent storage space and 100 mpg), and it can do 40 mph which is just what I need for keeping up with traffic on streets. The insurance is a fraction of the cost of a car, and the moped itself is only $2300 new but I will need a full motorcycle license. What do you guys think?

Note: I've already considered an e-bike, but the ones that don't require any registration or license (<20 mph) are so slow I might as well ride my normal bike. Also, my typical commute with this thing would be a 10 mile ride each way a few times a week.

I've decided against a 50cc as I would be constantly flooring it to keep up with traffic on secondary traffic. Instead of that, I've been considering a 150cc scooter such as this Honda PCX150 lately:

However, this puts me in the $3000s range and I have barely any income to save money with, so not completely sure about it.

This isn't a bad idea, to be honest. However, what with all of the Snapchatting-and-Periscoping distracted drivers of today, I hope you don't get Twittered into the Tour de Mort by a soccer mom in her Suburban as she's focusing on everything but driving while on your cute little Honda.

It's not a bad choice if you can use it.
I know I bought a moped like that some years ago. It was good, but in most cases my mom would drive me where I needed to go. It also had a few problems, and I ended up selling it.
Riding a moped can be really fun, and if you have some use for it, then yes, why not ? Just remember to be careful : I know I personally saw a lot of drivers overtaking mopeds really fastly, without caring about whether they are doing it dangerously or not.

Now I need to figure out how to save enough money to pay for the 'ped and the insurance for a couple years. Probably $5000.

For me I would get maybe at least a 100cc moped just so you can drive on highways without being pulled over for driving too slow (every road here is a highway)

I am trying to keep costs at a minimum because it is hard for me to obtain money at all, plus in California you need a 125cc moped to drive on roads with more than a 40-45 mph speed limit.

Also, I haven't mentioned this yet, but the other option I am considering for a first vehicle is a friend's 2003 Honda Accord LX, but I don't know how the insurance rates of that and a moped would compare.

Well, it costs around $2500 to actually buy the thing, and I want to save up some money so I can pay for the insurance at least for a year or so using just that reserve.

I know about those. I may live in the USA, but I know quite a bit about euro cars.
