This is the first prop I've ever tried making. The main thing I want to fix right now is, getting the actual model to appear in game. Yes I know I don't have a material set to the few visible things, but I know how to do that.
I'm still new to understand jbeam, so if you think you can help fix, try to be very specific with what you are explaining.

I see quite a bit of spiking. Is it spawning correctly when you pause the physics and respawn it? Also are you using modifiers in Blender? If yes, apply them before exporting.

 

I see quite a lot of coltris for such a simple shape.

If everything explodes, chances are that either beams in the structure are too tense, or parts of the structure are colliding. Or both.

Disable triangles, see if the basic structure is stable, and only then work on coltris.

 

While that is a good thing to try in a situation where you're dealing with instabilities, it can also be way more than triangles in poor placement or too many triangles;
It could be nodes with Self Collision enabled, beams connecting nodes of vastly different weights, too many beams connecting parts together, too high of beam settings, ect.

What I am saying is that there could be alot more going on, however triangles can be part of the issue.

Again, Not only can it be ColTris, but it could also be a whole number of things.



If physics is stable upon spawning (I.E The game doesn't insta-freeze,) press Ctrl. B until you see the Stress debug mode. This will show you if there are any instabilities in your JBeam (Via flashing beams. Its quite obvious if you see it, its kinda hard for me to describe it.)

If your JBeam is unstable, I also find it good practice to simplify, and slowly work back to what I had until I find the part causing the instability, or instabilities.

I was working on a fuel tank for a mod I was working on, and I had to refrain from adding beams on the inside of the tank, and had to avoid connecting the tank to the frame (It was a fuel tank like on some old trucks where its behind the bench seat instead of under the vehicle like today and in most cases.)

If its not stable on spawning, again disable the collision triangles, or remove them, and again start simplifying the JBeam structure.


In a JBeam, I typically go for crossing the faces, and as few supporting beams as I need on the inside of what I am working on. Ofcourse this also depends upon what your making, but this is a good starting point. If you think you need more beams on the inside of your structure, then you can put them in. Don't go overkill, otherwise you're just going to have problems.

And from the looks of things, even if you're using the Node Beam editor, you really don't want to go haywire because it's kinda hard to remove beams if you're not organizing them correctly. Use only as many beams as you need to hold the structure together, keep it stable, and have the rigidity that it needs. Rigidity can be adjusted quite easily, though can lead to instabilities also.

As for the model, again make sure your modifiers are applied, if you're using any, especially Mirror modifiers. While the .DAE will preserve alot of things upon being exported, which is useful sometimes, it can't preserve a modifier. You either have to apply the modifier before exporting the model, or discard it.


I apologize if this post is a bit redundant, I am kinda tired right now, and I might've missed something quite obvious in the previous posts. Feel free to correct me on anything here.

 

That's why I suggested to check his untested node/beam structure first.

Adding coltris at this stage was premature to say the least.

 

I actually completely forgot I had a mirror modifier on in blender, so thanks for mentioning that. It does spawn with no spiking and everything in place when frozen. In this picture, I have the triangles disabled too. I also included a stress picture.

The lid is collapsing. It's not attached to the dumpster in any way.

 

That is partly true. There are 3 beams that connect the lid to the body.

 

Likely not enough.

And the structure of the lid itself can't mantain its shape, needs more triangulation.

No. Didn't do anything today. Flying told me I had to add more nodes and triangles to the lids, and I didn't feel like trying to do that. I use the BNE and its very hard to see and use, so I'll just work up the motivation to do it sometime.

 

Progress report:
I've started to remake the entire jbeam again. That was the best option.
As of these pictures, I'm working on making the walls stable and not wobble. There is no jbeam for the lids yet. There is some spiking but I'm getting help from Flying with that. (He's pretty much helping with everything) There's a picture of the model in game frozen and unfrozen. @Driv3r1142 if you have any other advice, I'm all ears.

 

I think with the JBeam you're getting there. I'm glad you're working with Flying on the JBeam stuff. Whilist I have a general understanding of what I am doing, he can probably explain things a bit better than I can at this point in time.


When you come to the lid, make sure that it is a separate part entirely, and uses the slot system. While it might not seem like much now, it will be very helpful when you try to tackle things that are more complex that would take further use of this system.


Again I think Flying can help you from here on out, if you're working with him now.

Here's what happens when you crash into it currently. I think it's pretty good. Im also starting to have a problem where the beams aren't affected the model in any way.

 

Nodes are what affect your model. Beams merely support the nodes and keep them in place.

 

I see. What would be the reason the nodes aren't affecting the model then?

 

Improper nodeGroups or misplaced nodes.
